STAFF DRESS CODE

 

 

The Vernon Parish School Board is committed to the belief that for the learning process for students to be maximized, it is important that the school staff establish an example of excellence by their professional dress and demeanor.

 

DRESS AND PERSONAL GROOMING

 

Employees are expected to be guided in their grooming habits by what is most generally accepted in the business and professional world.  Employee dress and grooming shall not detract from the learning/educational environment of students’ participation in classes, school programs or other school-related activities.  Extremes in style and fit in employee dress and extremes in style of grooming shall not be permitted.  Building administrators and principals shall be authorized to use their discretion in determining extremes in styles of dress and grooming and what is appropriate and suitable for School Board employees.  No employees shall wear, possess, use, distribute, display, or sell any clothing, jewelry, emblem, blade, symbols, sign, or other things which are affiliated with drugs, alcohol, violence, or gang-related activities.  Policies regarding dress and grooming stress the importance of reducing distractions that inhibit learning and are addressed in an attempt to enhance the learning environment.

 

The School Board shall not discriminate against an employee on the basis of a natural, protective or cultural hairstyle.  Natural, protective, or cultural hairstyle shall include, but is not limited to, afros, dreadlocks, twists, locs, braids, cornrow braids, Bantu knots, curls, and hair styled to protect hair texture or for cultural significance.

 

ACCEPTABLE DRESS FOR WOMEN

 

  1. Dress skorts, skirts, dresses, jumpers (all no shorter than three inches above the knee), pants (with a belt if there are belt loops) and pantsuits.  Blouses should be tucked in unless square-tailed or rounded.  Jackets/blazers are optional.

  2. Sleeveless tops are only acceptable if the top meets the edge of the shoulder and no undergarments are showing.

  3. Hose, socks or trouser socks are required except with open-toed shoes or sandals that are worn with calf skirts, dresses or pants.

  4. Items not allowed include see-through or tight fitting tops, leggings or tights, denim pants of all colors, wind suits, and sweat suits.

 

ACCEPTABLE DRESS FOR MEN

 

  1. Slacks, trousers, dress pants (with belt or suspenders if there are belt loops), polo, oxford shirts or sweaters tucked in unless square-tailed or banded; jackets/blazers are optional, and socks are mandatory.  Dress shirt and tie are required for male teachers in the classroom.

  2. Items not acceptable are sleeveless shirts, denim jeans, wind or sweat suits, T­-shirts, overalls or shorts.  Teachers of agriculture and industrial arts may wear denim jeans while working in the shop.

  3. Gym teachers while they are in the gym may wear athletic or tennis shoes, wind suits, walking shorts or coaching shorts, within three inches of the knee; socks must be worn at all times.  Stretch shorts, short shorts, polyester shorts or T­-shirts are not allowed.

 

School spirit days shall allow teachers to wear T-shirts.  Jeans are not permitted.  Other than secretaries, paraprofessionals and receptionists, support personnel shall not be required to meet the dress code.
