THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, October 12, 1999, AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT PARKER CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mark Smith.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kim Reese.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of October 7, 1999.

 

Dr. Cindy Gillespie presented copies of the 1999 School Accountability Report, which is developed specifically for school principals, the School Report Card, developed specifically for parents,  and the School Accountability Roster. She also reported a very productive and positive Staff Development Day which was conducted on October 7, 1999.

 

Tom Neubert recognized Mrs. Beth Williams, school nurse, who recently received an award from Louisiana School Nurses Organization for outstanding contributions to school nursing.

On motion of Ted Paris, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve new Head Start policies.

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to re-open bids for the sale of a used bus at Evans School for one month.

 

On motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

                                                               R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express

 its condolences to Mrs. Joyce Sue Ray, cook at Pickering High School, in the recent death of her husband, Mr. Arthur Eugene Ray; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Ray was a lifetime resident of the Pickering area and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board requests that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Ray and her family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Philip Gunn, on behalf of W.W. Parker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

                                                                               R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express it deepest

 sympathies to Mrs. Dean Trotti, secretary at Hornbeck School, in the recent death of her mother, Mrs. Ima Roberts, of Hornbeck, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts was a lifelong resident of Hornbeck and she will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Trotti and her entire family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express it condolences to the family of Mr. Charles C. Clear, Jr. of Pitkin who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Clear was the father of Mr. Michael Clear, teacher at Pickering High School, and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the members of the Board adopts this memorial resolution and request that a copy be sent to Mr. Michael Clear and his family at this time of bereavement.

 

On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish wish to express their condolences to the family of Mrs. Cordie Davis, of Leesville, who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis was the mother of William Charles Hilton, bus operator at West Leesville Elementary School, and Marvin "Bub" Hilton, bus operator at Vernon Middle School, and the mother-in-law of Mrs. Sandra Hilton, teacher at West Leesville Elementary School;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that copies by sent to Mr. William Charles Hilton and Mr. Marvin Hilton at this time of sorrow. 

 

On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board were deeply saddened by the untimely death of Richard Craig "Richie" Rusk II, a member of the eight  grade class at Evans School; and

WHEREAS, Richie was a loving and caring young man and he will be sadly missed by the staff and students at Evans School, his family and friends, and by the members of the Evans Eagles summer league baseball team;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Board takes this means to express its heartfelt sympathies to Richie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rusk and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Miller, and requests that a copies of this memorial resolution be sent to them and the entire family at this time of sorrow.

 

A motion was made by A.C. Dowden, seconded by the Board to fully support the Proposed Tobacco Settlement Amendment which would dedicate a percentage of proceeds from the settlement to education.
