THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN SPECIAL SESSION, AUGUST 17, 1999, AT 4:00 P.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT PARKER CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Willis Farris.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by A.C. Dowden, Jr.

 

Superintendent Schwartz began the meeting by stating that the emergency meeting was called for the purpose of making decisions concerning health and hospitalization insurance for Vernon Parish School Board employees.

 

On recommendation of the Insurance Committee and on motion of Mark Smith, seconded by the Board, the Board approved  re-entering the State Employees Group Benefits Program, effective September 1, 1999, and paying 100% of the sur-charge.

 

Bill Endris explained that there will be an open enrollment so that any employee who is not enrolled in the current health insurance plan, will have an opportunity to enroll in the State Group Benefits Program. The effective date for coverage for new employees will be November 1, 1999. Retirees who wish to enroll will have a one-time only opportunity to do so.

 

On recommendation of the Finance Committee and on motion of A.C. Dowden, seconded by the Board, the Board authorized Superintendent Schwartz to borrow up to $2,000,000, for a period not to exceed 5 years, to pay the one-year risk-rated premium penalty in order to re-enter the State Employees Group Benefits program.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Gene Haymon, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board voted to adjourn.
