THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, AUGUST 6, 1998 AT 10:00 A.M., AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT DOWDEN CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Richard Schwartz, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Murphy O'Banion.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Benard McKee.
On motion of Willis Farris, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of July 7, 1998.
On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of W.W. Parker, seconded by Richard Bailes, the Board voted to approve the attached list of resignations.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the attached employee termination.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Richard Bailes, seconded by Linda West, the Board voted to approve the attached list of sabbatical leaves.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Betty Westerchil, seconded by Gerald Burns, the Board voted to approve the attached list of leaves without pay.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of C.A. Hughes, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve the attached list of employee transfers.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Willis Farris, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to name attached displaced teacher who was not named in May.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by Willis Farris, the Board voted to approve the attached list of new employees.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to appoint James Britt as assistant principal at Pitkin High School
On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Benard McKee, seconded by Murphy O'Banion, the Board voted to appoint Robert Simmonsen as assistant principal for one-half year at Rosepine Elementary.
On recommendation of Jackie Self, Personnel Director, and on motion of Willis Farris, seconded by Mark Smith, the Board approved the hiring of retirees to fill vacancies in the critical shortage areas of science and special education.
At this time Superintendent recognized Danny Wilson, Regional Director of Bell South, who presented three Bell South grants to three Vernon Parish teacher. Receiving grants were, Doris Werner, teacher at Evans School, Marnae Cullem, teacher at Evans School, and Cindy Teasley, teacher at Anacoco High School. The grants will be used to purchase software and visual aids for classrooms.
Dr. Cindy Gillespie gave a report of Vernon Parish's outstanding Iowa Test results. She reported that Vernon Parish fourth, sixth, and ninth graders ranked first in comparison with the surrounding parishes.
On recommendation of Bill Endris, Director of Finance, and on motion of Murphy O'Banion, seconded by Philip Gunn, the Board voted to adopt the attached resolution approving millage rates to be levied 1998.

On recommendation of Bill Endris and on motion of Gerald Burns, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to adopt a budget amendment for the end of FY 1998.
On motion of Mark Smith, seconded by Gerald Burns, the Board voted to approve a request for a jury trial in Civil Suit number 61970.
On recommendation of Bobby Moss, Purchasing Agent, and on motion of Linda West, seconded Kim Reese, the Board voted to readvertise for risograph supplies for the 1998-99 school year.
On motion of B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to convey their deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. Erby Thompson, Sr. of Pitkin who recently passed away; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson was the father of Mrs. Quita Antony, a retired teacher in our school system and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board does, hereby, adopt this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Antony and her family in their time of bereavement.
On motion of Richard Bailes, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board was saddened by the recent death of Mrs. Ava Grimes, a retired cook at East Leesville Elementary School; and,
WHEREAS, Mrs. Grimes was the mother of Mrs. Shirley Parker, a cook at Simpson School and she will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board adopts this memorial resolution and requests that a copy be sent to Mrs. Grimes= family, along with its sincere condolences in their time of sorrow.
There being no further business, on motion of Benard McKee, seconded by W.W. Parker, the Board voted to adjourn.
