THE PARISH BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN SPECIAL SESSION MAY 6, 1997 AT 10:00 A.M. AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT FARRIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mr. Murphy O=Banion.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mr. W.W. Parker
On motion of Mr. W.W. Parker, seconded by Mr. Mark Smith, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of May 1, 1997.
Superintendent Schwartz called on Mr. Joe Pope, Secondary Curriculum Coordinator to introduce principals and board members who recognized students for their participation in various Vernon Parish, District, and State competitions.
On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and motion of Mr. W.W. Parker, seconded by Mr. Gene Haymon the Board voted to approve the attached list of sabbatical leave requests.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Mr. Gene Haymon, seconded by Ms. Linda West, the Board voted to approve the attached employee transfer.

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz and on motion of Mr. Philip Gunn, seconded by Mrs. Betty Westerchil, the Board voted to approve the attached employee resignation.

On motion of Mr. Benard McKee, seconded by Mr. Murphy O=Banion, the Board voted to advertise for a principal for Rosepine Elementary School to be named June 10, 1997.
Mr. Jackie Self, Food Service Supervisor reported that the State Department has approved Vernon Parish=s application for a Summer Feeding Program.
On motion of Mr. Murphy O=Banion, seconded by Mr. W.W. Parker, the Board voted to approve the Summer Feeding Program for Vernon Parish. The parishwide program will be operated at Vernon Elementary School, Monday through Thursday each week, offering a free meal a day to all Vernon Parish children ages 0 to 18 years.
On motion of Mr. Gene Haymon, seconded by Mrs. Kim Reese, the Board voted to approve the Vernon Parish Transportation Handbook.
On motion of Mr. Murphy O=Banion, seconded by Mr. Benard McKee, the Board voted to open bids for general supplies.
On motion of Mr. W.W. Parker, seconded by Mr. C.A. Hughes, the Board voted to refer the bids for general supplies to a committee members Mr. Bobby Moss, Mr. Bill Endris, and Mrs. Dona Dowden for tabulation.
On motion of Mr. B.R. Harvey, seconded by Mr. W.W. Parker, the Board voted to authorize Superintendent Schwartz, Mr. Bobby Moss, and Mrs. Sandra Whitlock, Principal of Pitkin High School, to dispose of used equipment at Pitkin High School.
On motion of Mr. Benard McKee, seconded by Mr. Murphy O=Banion, the Board voted to authorize Superintendent Schwartz and Mr. Bobby Moss to dispose of used centrifuges at the Central Office Nurses Station.
On motion of Mr. Murphy O=Banion, seconded by Mr. Benard McKee, the Board voted to award the bid for Evans building materials to C. Hugh Tarver, Jr. and Associates for all materials, except the windows, in the amount of $5,880.00 and to award the bid for the windows to Flynn Building Specialists in the amount of $2,455.60.
On motion of Mr. Murphy O=Banion, seconded by Mr. Benard McKee, the Board voted to advertise for bids for garbage collection.
On motion of Mr. B.R. Harvey, seconded by Mr. Benard McKee, the Board voted to authorize Superintendent Schwartz, Mr. Bobby Moss, and Mrs. Sandra Whitlock, Principal at Pitkin High School to dispose of a Pitkin School bus which had previously been offered for sale but no bids were received.
On motion of Mrs. Betty Westerchil, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following resolution in observance of Teacher Appreciation Week.
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board appreciates the dedicated and professional service rendered by all of its teachers and,
WHEREAS , the Vernon Parish teachers work tirelessly to improve the quality of life for all Vernon Parish students and,
WHEREAS, Vernon Parish teachers continue to provide quality education for our students under sometimes less than adequate circumstances,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Vernon Parish School Board does adopt this resolution in appreciation of all its teachers in observance of Teacher Appreciation Week.
There being no further business, on motion of Mr. Benard McKee, seconded by Mr. Richard Bailes, the Board voted to adjourn.
