THE PARISH BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 1995, AT 10:00 A.M. IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA  71446   PRESIDENT SMITH CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Sammy L. Hinson, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mr. B.R. Harvey, Ward Five.

 

The pledge of allegiance was led by Mr. Murphy O'Banion, Ward Four.

 

On motion of Mr. Burns, seconded by Mr. Gunn, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of January 10, 1994.

 

On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. Arvil Harvey, the Board voted to accept the attached list of resignations:

On motion of Mrs. Williams, seconded by Mr. O'Banion, the Board voted to name the attached list of new employees:

On motion of Mr. McRae, seconded by Mr. Dowden, the Board voted to approve the transfer of Mr. Billy Faulks, from custodian at Leesville High School to custodian at Simpson High School.

 

On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. McKee, the Board voted to approve the attached sabbatical leave request:

Mrs. Judith Willis, 5th grade teacher at Anacoco Elementary, addressed the Board.  Mrs. Willis reviewed her VIGIL grant and explained her use of math manipulatives for students.  She also discussed the Quality in Math and Science grants and the growing interest of Vernon Parish teachers in grant writing.

 

Dr. Gillespie and Mr. Perkins addressed the Board and reviewed the State of Louisiana Department of Education Bulletin 1794, Textbook and Library Book Policy and Procedure Manual as it pertains to the Homestudy Program.  Superintendent Hinson stated that state policies and procedures are required to be followed for this program.

 

Mr. Perkins announced that Safe Kids Week will be sponsored by the Department of Education the week of May 6-13, 1995.  He stated that grades 3-6 will be working in this awareness program.  On motion of Mr. Porter, seconded by Mrs. Williams, the Board voted to support the Safe Kids Week in Vernon Parish.

 

There were no bids received for the sale of used stoves at Pitkin nor the used projectors at Anacoco.  On motion of Mr. Porter, seconded by Mr. B.R. Harvey, the Board voted to authorize the Superintendent, the school principals and Mr. Moss to dispose of the unusable equipment at Anacoco and Pitkin.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Hinson, and on motion of Mr. B.R. Harvey, seconded by Mr. Porter the Board voted to lease lots 3 and 4 of block 5, W.L. Mathis Addition, to the Senior Citizens Center of Pitkin.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Hinson, and on motion of Mr. McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to declare Thursday, February 23, 1995 as Retired Teachers' Day.

 

Superintendent Hinson asked that Dr. Gillespie review the Graduate Exit Exam with the Board.  Dr. Gillespie stated that every ninth grade student in Vernon Parish was provided with a brochure explaining the test to them and to their parents.  She reported this state required test begins administration in the tenth grade and every graduating senior must pass this test to receive a Louisiana high school diploma.  Remediation is offered to all students.  Board members asked that the Vernon Parish policy adopted in 1994 be reviewed.

 

Superintendent Hinson stated that any senior who passes all Vernon Parish School Board requirements for graduation but does not pass the GEE is allowed to march at the high school graduations, however will not receive a diploma until the GEE is successfully passed.

 

On motion of Mr. McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

                                                                               R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to convey their heartfelt sympathies to the children of Mrs. Beda Stringfield who recently passed away,

                WHEREAS, Mrs. Stringfield was the wife of the late F.G. Stringfield, retired agriculture teacher at Rosepine High School,

                THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family of Mrs. Stringfield along with sincere condolences.

 

On motion of Mr. McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

                                                                               R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, it is with great sadness and sorrow that the Vernon Parish School Board does express their heartfelt condolences to the family and children of Mr. Heath Conway Waddle,

                WHEREAS, Mr. Waddle was a 1993 graduate of Rosepine High School and he will be sadly missed by his many friends and family,

                THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board does request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family

of Mr. Waddle along with sincere sympathies from this Board.

 

 There being no further business, on motion of Mr. Burns, seconded by Mrs. Williams, the Board voted to adjourn until Tuesday, February 7, 1995 at 10:00 a.m.
