September 3, 1992

 

THE PARISH BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1992, IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA  President McRae called the meeting to order and on roll the following members were present:

CAROLYN WILLIAMS

ABSENT:   B.R. HARVEY  OUT OF TOWN

 

There was also present Mr. Sammy L. Hinson, Secretary of the Board.  

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by  Mrs. Betty Westerchil, Ward One.

 

The pledge of allegiance was led by Mr. Wallace McRae, Wards Six and Eight.

 

On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. Arvil Harvey, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of August 25, 1992.

 

On motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Burns, the Board voted to approve the employee transfer list.

On motion of Mrs. Westerchil, seconded by  Mr. Smith, the Board voted to approve a leave without pay request for Inez Smith, special education aide, Vernon Elementary.

On motion of Mr. Porter, seconded by Mr. McKee, the Board voted to name the attached list of new employees:

At this time Superintendent Hinson and the Board recognized the following teachers who have been selected as Vernon Parish Teachers of the Year.

 

                Gaye McKee, Rosepine Elementary, Elementary Teacher of the Year

                Cassandra Wilson, Leesville Junior High School, Middle School Teacher of the Year

                Maxine Ellis, Leesville High School, High School Teacher of the Year

               

Each teacher was presented  a check in the amount of $500.00 for their outstanding accomplishments.

 

Ms. Cassandra Wilson, Middle School Teacher of the Year addressed the Board  relating successful teaching techniques she uses in her classes.

 

Stephanie Deselle, Council for a Better Louisiana, addressed the Board.  Mrs. Deselle explained the operation her organization which assists in long range and strategic planning for school systems.  On recommendation of Superintendent Hinson, and on motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mrs. Williams, the Board voted to make application to the Council for a Better Louisiana, for placement in the long range program.

 

Mr. Joe Tucker, Executive Director of  Byrd Hospital presented to the Board a refund check in excess of $5,600.00 for the Preferred Patient program offered by Byrd Hospital to Vernon Parish School Board Self - Insurance employee program.

 

On motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by Mrs. Westerchil, the Board voted to approve the following loans from General Fund:

 

                a.             Chapter II '93 and C/O  '93  $10,000.00

                b.             Starting Points (Preschool)                                  10,000.00

               

Superintendent Hinson recommended October 2, 1992, as a school holiday for Fair Day.  Board members suggested that a the Calendar Committee study fair day.  On motion of Mr. Porter, seconded by Mr. Arvil Harvey, the Board voted to approve Fair Day, Friday, October 2, 1992 as a school holiday.

 

Superintendent Hinson thanked Col. Tucker and Fort Polk for providing an activity bus to run at Leesville High School two days a week for those students participating in after school activities.

 

Superintendent Hinson reminded the Board that September 8, 1992 is a quarter evening meeting.

 

On motion of Mr. McKee, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to convey their heartfelt sympathies to Mayor Johnny Hall of Rosepine, in the recent death of his sister, Lula Mae Hodges,

                THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of the Vernon Parish School Board do hereby request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to the family of Mrs. Hodges along with sincere sorrows from this Board.

 

On motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to convey to the family of Mrs. Hazel Dennis VanDine who recently passed away,

                WHEREAS, Mrs. VanDine was the mother-in-law of Dee VanDine, secretary at Leesville High School, and the grandmother of Denise Karamales, assessment teacher, Debbie Driscoll and  Cheryl Browning both teachers at Leesville Junior High School,

                THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent the family of Mrs. VanDine along with sincere sympathies from this Board.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. Dowden, the Board voted to adjourn until Tuesday, September 8, 1992, at 5:00 p.m.
