THE PARISH BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON MARCH 1, 1990, AT 10:00 A.M. IN THE BOARD ROOM OF THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 201 Belview Road, Leesville, LA President Harvey called the meeting to order and on roll call the following members were present:

There was also present Mr. Sammy L. Hinson, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Mr. Wallace McRae, Wards Six and Eight.
The pledge of allegiance was led by Col Chester Davis.
On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. Goins, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of February 20, 1990.
On motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by Mr. Hughes, the Board voted to accept list resignations:

On motion of Mr. Burns, seconded by Mr. Goins, the Board voted to rescind the February 20, 1990 resignation of Mr. Neal Thompson.
On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. O'Banion, the Board voted to approve a leave without pay request for Mr. Neal Thompson, February 24 through June 30, 1990.
On motion of Mr. Burns, seconded by Mr.Goins, the Board voted to name the attached list of new employees:

At this time Superintendent Hinson recognized the following groups of students:
Leesville High School state choral winners. Each student was presented a Superintendent Certificate for the outstanding accomplishments in music.
FBLA members from the Leesville High School and Pickering High School clubs. Mr. Jim Kitts addressed the Board and gave a brief overview of the video taping and letters sent by the FBLA members to the soldiers in Panama. Col Robert Coffey presented each student with a certificate from the United States Army.
The Principals of the Year were named and recognized.

The Principals were presented a Superintendent's Certificate.
On motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by Mr. Hughes, the Board voted to advertise for bids for roofing materials for Leesville Junior High School. Bids to be received April 5, 1990.
On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. Hughes, the Board voted to proclaim April 1-7, 1990 as Chapter I Week.
Superintendent Hinson announced that two quotes had been received for General Liability and Teacher Liability insurance:
Morris Insurance Company
Snowden Word Insurance
On motion of Mr. Hughes, seconded by Mr. O'Banion, the Board voted to authorize the Insurance Committee and central office personnel to open and review insurance quotes.
On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to commend all athletes in Vernon Parish School for excellence in sports.
On motion of Mr. B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board do hereby convey their heartfelt sympathies to the family of George Johnson who recently passed away,
WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was the father-in-law of Betty Johnson, school food services technician at Pitkin School, and uncle of Randy Spears, bus driver at Pitkin School, now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent the family of Mr. Johnson.
On motion of Mr. Murphy O'Banion, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board do hereby wish to convey their condolences and sympathy to the family of Woodrow Pelt who recently passed away,
WHEREAS, Mr. Pelt was a life long resident of the Pickering Community,
WHEREAS, Mr. Pelt was the father-in-law of Carlene Pelt, teacher at Simpson High School, and he was the uncle of Cathie Haley, teacher at Evans High School,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution to Mrs. Travis Pelt and her family.
On motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board records with grief and sadness the recent death of Mr. Robert "Bob" Sexton,
WHEREAS, Mr. Sexton served on the Leesville City Police Force and while serving as a policeman, Mr. Sexton assisted the schools of this city for many years,
WHEREAS, the Board takes this time to express to his wife, Ruby Sexton, their sympathy to her and her family,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to Mrs. Sexton.
On motion of Mr. Hughes, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board records with grief and sadness the recent death of Mr. D.J. Robertson,
WHEREAS, Mr. Robertson was a life long resident of this community,
WHEREAS, Mr. Robertson was the father of Sue Robertson, Spur Learn teacher at Hornbeck High School,
WHEREAS, the Board takes this time to convey sympathy to Ms. Robertson and her family.
On motion of Mr. B. R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board learned with grief and sadness of the recent death of Mr. Ike Fee,
WHEREAS, Mr. Fee was a life long resident of the Cottonwood Community and father of Yvonne Bennett, teachers' aides at Evans High School,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board request that a copy of this memorial resolution to Mrs. Bennett and her family.
Superintendent Hinson announced that the Parish Academic Banquet for senior students with a 3.5 grade point average or better will be held May 11, 1990. Dr. Robert Alost will be the guest speaker.
There being no further business, on motion of Mr. Dowden, seconded by Mr. Burns, the Board voted to adjourn until Tuesday, March 6, 1990.
