THE PARISH BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON September 7, 1989, at 10:0 a.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 201 Belview Road,Leesville, LA

 

President Goins called the meeting to order and on roll call the following members were present:

There was also present Mr. Sammy L. Hinson, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mr. Wallace McRae, Ward 6 & 8.

 

The pledge of allegiance was led by Mr. Murphy O'Banion, Ward 4.

 

On motion of Mr. Arvil Harvey, seconded by Mr. Parker, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of August 13, 1989.

 

On motion of Mr. Baggs, seconded by Mr. Burns, the board voted to accept the attached list of resignations:

On motion of Mr. B. R. Harvey, seconded by Mr. Gunn, the board voted to accept the attached list of new employees: ATTACHED

 

Mr. Vic Smith, President of the Federation of Teachers, addressed the board and thanked the board for the recent $400.00 salary increment.

 

On motion of Mr. McKee, seconded by Mr. O'Banion, the Board voted to approve a loan from General Fund to Ward Seven Maintenance for $10,000.00.

 

On motion of Mr. Parker, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to declare Friday, September 29, 1989 as School Fair Day.

 

On motion of Mr. Baggs, seconded by Mr. Burns, the Board voted to express appreciation to the West Louisiana Forestry Festival Board for their hard work.

 

On motion of Mr. Burns, seconded by Mr. Dowden, the board voted to open the bids received for the sale of the activity bus at Leesville High School:

On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. Hughes, the Board voted to award the bid to Mr. Wilson, the only bidder for the bus.

 

On motion of Mr. Arvil Harvey, seconded by Mr. O'Banion, the Board voted to open the bids received for the construction of classrooms at Polk Elementary.

On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. Arvil Harvey, the (I Board voted to take under advisement the bids received for the construction of classrooms for Polk Elementary.

On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. McKee, the Board voted to advertise for bids for the construction of an Athletic Field House at Pickering High School. Bids to be received October 5, 1989.

 

On motion of Mr. Hughes, seconded by Mr. Gunn, the Board voted to declare the week of September 11-15 as Open House Week.

 

On motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. McRae, the Board voted to advertise for bids for the purchase of cafeteria tables for Polk Elementary. Bids to be received October 5, 1989.

 

On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by Mr. Dowden, the Board voted to advertise for bids for the purchase of cafeteria tables for Leesville High School. Bids to be received October 5, 1989.

 

On motion of Mr. Parker, seconded by Mr. Dowden, the Board voted to advertise for bids for CD ROM players for the Chapter II program. Bids to be received October 5, 1989.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Hinson, and on motion of Mr. Hughes, seconded by Mr. Parker, the Board voted to approve $6,000.00 for Leesville High School's athletic fund.

 

On motion of Mr. Parker, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following resolution:

On motion of Mr. B.R. Harvey, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to designate September 8, 1989 as National Pledge of Allegiance Day as prescribed by the President of the United States.

 

Mr. Hughes asked that it be announced that Pat Anderson, teacher at Leesville High School has been instructed that there will be no city business conducted during school hours relative to his position as Mayor of the city of Leesville.

 

On motion of Mr. Gunn, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board learned with grief and sadness of the recent untimely death of Mr. J.B. Sowells, retired teacher from Vernon Parish,

WHEREAS, Mr. Sowells taught for the Vernon Parish School system for twenty years and served loyally,

WHEREAS, Mr. Sowells dedicated his life to the children of this parish and was an outstanding educator,

WHEREAS, Mr. Sowells was also involved with community work and dedicated many hours and much time to the betterment of Leesville,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board takes this time to send condolences to his family and request that a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his brother, Mr. Paul Sowells, bus operator for this school system.

 

There being no further business, on motion of Mr. O'Banion, seconded by Mr. Gunn, the Board voted to adjourn.
