THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT –JACKIE SELF CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

Item #1:            Approval of Minutes of May 6, 2021 Meeting

On motion of David Detz seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 6, 2021 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Item #2:            Approval of Employee Retirements

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve the employee retirements.

 

Item #3:            Budget Amendments Related to Personnel Changes

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

Item #4:                        Pay the Claims

On motion of Vernon L. Travis, Jr., seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Item #5:            Non- Promotional Principal Position

On motion of Vernon L. Travis, Jr. seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for a non- promotional principal position at Pitkin High School.

 

Item #6:             Bids for Milk, Bread and Juice

Director of Finance, Tim Ward presented the bids received for milk, bread and juice.

On motion of Vernon L. Travis, Jr., seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept the bids from Flowers for bread and Borden’s for milk and juice.  Bids attached to minutes.

 

Item #7:            Janitorial and Cafeteria Supplies

Director of Finance, Tim Ward also presented the Board with the bids from six vendors for janitorial and cafeteria supplies.  Bid attached to minutes.

 

Item #8:            Budget Revisions for 2020-2021

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept the Budget Revisions for 2020-2021.

 

Item #9:            Student Recognition

Students from Leesville High School, Evans High School and Pitkin High School were recognized for their 3.0 and above grade point average and presented with an award and a medallion for their high academic achievement.

 

Item #10:          Report from Curriculum Committee

 

Vernon L. Travis, Jr., Salary/Personnel Chairperson reported to the Board on the meeting held at 9:30.  The following items were discussed:

1)         Strong Start Update - Topics discussed:  project timeline, develop concrete strategic priorities and initiatives, 5 year plan and identify strategic priorities.

2)         Other Business -Paper base testing is complete and shipped out.  Computer testing will begin next week.

 

Item #11:          ` Superintendent’s Remarks

Superintendent James Williams welcomed all to the meeting and asked Col. Ryan K. Roseberry for an update at Fort Polk.

Col. Roseberry had no events or updates to report to the Board at this time.

Mr. Williams asked Tim Ward and Scott Walker to introduce the Employee of the Month to the Board.   Mr. Walker with Taylor and Sons Insurance informed the Board that Jan Turnage had been chosen as Employee of the Month.  Ms. Turnage is a Nurse at Pitkin High School.  Ms. Turnage has been employed by the Vernon Parish School Board since 8-14-01 and will be retiring on 6-4-21.  Ms. Turnage has been an excellent employee, especially during the COVID process of training and paperwork along with normal duties at school.

Director of Title/Federal Programs and Food Service, Joey Whiddon informed the Board that all students regardless of their financial status, will be allowed to eat free for the 2021-2022 school.

Mr. Williams discussed updates from the Louisiana School Board Association Capitol Conference that he and Vernon L. Travis, Jr. (district 6 board member) attended.  He also informed the Board that our local legislative representatives were present and informed on the bills to be presented.

They also discussed the new proposed tax collection which has not been decided yet.

In addition, Mr. Williams reminded the Board that Hicks High, Hornbeck High, and Anacoco High School are in baseball semi-finals.

 

Item #12:          Memorial Resolutions

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of  Edward Allen Garess who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Garess was the husband of Nita Garess former Pickering High School cook; and   

            WHEREAS, Mr. Garess  was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
