THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT –JACKIE SELF CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by: LAMA/SUPERINTENDENT, MAURICE JOHNSON

Item #1: Approval of Minutes of April 20, 2021 Meeting
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 20, 2021 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Item #2: Food Service Quotation Calendar for 2021-2022
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar for 2021-2022.
Item #3: Advertise Bids
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to advertise bids for storm damage roof repairs and replacement for Hicks High School.
Item #4: Relocate lst Grade from ELE to WLE
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to relocate lst grade from ELE to WLE for the 2021-2022 school year.
Item #5: 2021-2022 Virtual School Procedures
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve 2021-2022 virtual school procedures.
Item #6: Student Recognition
Director of Curriculum, Renita Page and Special Education Supervisor, Leslie Ortiz presented senior students from Anacoco High School, Simpson High School, Pickering High School, and Rosepine High School with certificates for athletic accomplishments and medals for their academic grade point average.
Item #7: Head Start Update
Director of Head Start, Curtis Clay and Head Start Program Coordinator, Cheree Atkins gave an update on Head Start enrollment, funding and preparation for the 2021-2022 school year. Ms. Atkins also discussed the Early Head Start program which is a new program to start in the fall. There was no policy council meeting held.
Item #8: Salary Personnel Report
Angie Davis, Salary/Personnel Chairperson reported to the Board on the meeting held at 9:30 and the items discussed by Personnel Director, Mike Kay. The following items were discussed:
1) Personnel Changes
2) Advertising for a non- promotional principal position at Pitkin High School
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to add to the Tuesday, May 11th meeting for approval to advertise for the non-promotional principal position at Pitkin High School.
Item #9: Report from Finance Committee
Finance Chairperson, Steve Woods reported to the Board on the 9:30 Finance Committee meeting. He informed the Board that Finance Director, Tim Ward presented the Board with the Vernon Parish School Board Fiscal Year 2020-2021 Budget Adjustments and the General Operating Fund for May, 2021 and explained in detail. Mr. Ward discussed the financial revisions and discussed grant awards and amounts received. On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to add to the Tuesday, May 11th meeting for approval.
Item #10: Superintendent’s Remarks
Superintendent, James Williams welcomed all to the meeting and asked Col. Roseberry for an update on Fort Polk events. Col. Roseberry informed the Board of only one event scheduled at this time. The Catfish Derby event will take place on Saturday, May 8th at 7:00 AM.
Mr. Williams thanked all the parents and students who attended the meeting today from
AHS, PHS, RHS and Simpson and congratulated them on all their awards. He informed the Board that Evans, Hicks, Hornbeck, LHS and Pitkin will attend on Tuesday.
Mr. Williams also recognized our teachers and nurses for the outstanding job they perform each day, especially during the last year with COVID. This is Teacher Appreciation Week and Nurse Appreciation Week. Our teachers have gone above and beyond their teaching skills to perform virtual learning for our students. Our nurses have also performed very professionally concerning COVID procedures.
He reminded the Board to complete their disclosure statements. He also informed the Board that COVID safety rules have not changed for school employees or students. Only capacity numbers have changed on attending events.
Item #:11 Memorial Resolutions
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of JACK ANDRE who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Andre was a retired teacher and coach and former employee of the Vernon Parish School System; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Andre was the husband of former Vernon Parish teacher Carol Andre; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Andre was a former resident of Vernon Parish; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
