THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. VICE- PRESIDENT –SHAD STEWART CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

Item #1: Approval of Minutes

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the July 11, 2019 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Item #2: Approval of Employee Retirements

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to approve the employee retirements.

 

Item #3: Budget Amendments Related to Personnel Changes

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

Item #4: Pay the Claims

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Item #5:  Policy Updates Approval

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve the Vernon Parish School Board policy updates File: JGCB – Cf: JBC Immunizations

 

Item #6:  Vernon Parish School Board Policy Handbook Approval

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Robert Pynes, Jr. the Board voted to table the discussion of the Vernon Parish School Board policy on Facial Hair and earrings and to leave the current policy as stated in the handbook effective until an amendment is added if changed. The vote was 7 yeas and 1 nay.

 

Item #7:  Promotional Assistant Principal Position Simpson High School

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to advertise for a promotional assistant principal position at Simpson High School.

 

Item #8: Performance Goals for Promotional Contracts

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve the Performance Goals for Promotional Contracts presented at 7-ll-19.

 

Item #9:  Testing/Accountability Overview

Curriculum Directors Renita Page and Anne Smith discussed the following:

1.  Subject-area proficiency rates and annual rates of growth from one year to the next for students, schools, and school systems

2.  School performance scores that combine proficiency rates and growth rates, reported in School Finder

3.  2018-2019 school performance score formula

4.  LEAP tests changes over time

5.  Student progress toward mastery: ELA, math, & social studies 2015-2019

6.  Student progress toward mastery: Vernon Parish and Louisiana

7.  Student progress toward mastery: Summary

8.  2018-2019 assessment reporting timeline

9.  Reporting on overall school performance

 

Item #10: Superintendent’s Remarks

Superintendent Williams welcomed all to the meeting.

 

He thanked the Curriculum Department for all the hard work they do to keep the Board informed on curriculum matters and welcomed the Board members to visit the schools and observe what the Curriculum department actually has accomplished and continues to be a part of the success of excellent teachers and students accomplishing their goals.

 

Mr. Williams reminded the Board of the administrative workshop on July 30 & 31for the Principals and Assistant Principals.  Also the Cafeteria Conservation & Resource Fair will be held at Parkway Elementary on 8-1-19 from 5-7 pm.  We will provide everyone with an Open House schedule for the beginning of school.

 

Teacher workdays begin August 7 & 8.

 

He reminded the Board to mail their Family Disclosure statements.
