THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT –VERNON L. TRAVIS, JR. CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

Item #1: Approval of Minutes:
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 7, 2019 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Item #2: Approval of Employee Retirements:
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the employee retirements.
Item #3: Headstart Policies/Procedures:
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve Headstart policies and procedures presented at March 7th meeting.

Item # 4: Promotional Principal Position at Evans High School:
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Lisa Thompson, the Board voted to advertise for a promotional principal position at Evans High School.
Item #5: Approval of 2019-2020 School Calendar:
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Angie Davis, the Board voted to accept calendar “A”for the 2019-2020 school year.
Item #6: Recognition of Employee of the Month:
Director of Finance, Tim Ward introduced Jeff Taylor with Taylor and Sons Insurance and also the sponsor of “Employee of the Month” to the Board. Mr. Taylor announced to the Board that Ms. Olivia Clouse, 2nd grade teacher from West Leesville Elementary school, had been chosen as the employee of the month and presented Ms. Clouse with a plaque and a “bag of goodies” Ms. Clouse’s Principal Ms. Robertson also attended and spoke about the wonderful job Ms. Clouse does as teacher at her school.
Item #7: Recognition of PCAL Bus Driver of the Year
Director of Finance Tim Ward, Hornbeck Principal Raymond Jones, and Malcolm Morris with Morris Insurance and sponsor for PCAL presented Ms. Sharon Owens the PCAL Bus Driver of the Year award. Ms. Owens is a bus driver for Hornbeck High School. Bus drivers are chosen for this award because of many qualities which are leadership, attitude, perseverance, excellent student and parent relationships, and technical skills of which Ms. Owens posses all.
Item #8: Report from Athletic Committee:
Shad Stewart, Chairperson for the Athletic Committee reported to the Board that the Athletic Director, Hub Jordan discussed during the committee meeting the Vernon Parish School Board public conduct on school property policy (File: KGA) due to situations from previous athletic events. The Board decided to continue the discussion and to possibly update or change the current policy. The Board will have another scheduled Athletic Committee Meeting in May for further discussion. Sheriff Sam Craft was also present and reported to the Board that his officers would continue to be present at all sports events and to assist in all situations that may arise.
Item #9: Report from Transportation Committee:
Mike Kay, Assistant Superintendent reported to the Board for Transportation Director, Tom Neubert due to illness and absence of Jim Seaman, Chairperson. Mr. Kay reported on Vernon Parish School Board buses owned and contract buses and an update on maintenance, cost, bus barn employees, and proposition for more buses. The Board decided on further discussion and updated reports on costs of maintenance verses purchases.
Item #10: Superintendent’s Remarks
Superintendent James Williams congratulated Ms. Clouse, Teacher of the Month, Ms. Owens, PCAL Bus Driver of the Year, and Simpson High School Boys’ Basketball State Championship.
He informed the Board that the next Board Meeting will be April 4th at 10:00.
Item #:11 Memorial Resolutions
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Linda Goins who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Goins was the Wife of retired custodian Thomas Goins; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Goins was a resident of Vernon Parish; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

On motion of Lisa Thompson, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Ralph Bolton who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bolton was a retired teacher with the Vernon Parish School System and the Father of Jerry Bolton retired bus driver; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bolton was a resident of Vernon Parish; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
