THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT ANGIE DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

Roll Call

 

Item #1: August 7, 2018 Minutes

On motion of Vernon Travis, Jr., seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the August 7, 2018 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Item #2:  Partners in Education:

Charlotte Cooper, Director of Special Education, gave an update to the Board on the list of businesses signed up as Partners in Education.  The Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education work together with the Vernon Parish School Board to promote and help fund different activities in the school they are sponsoring.  The following is a list of businesses participating and the schools they are sponsoring.

 

 

Item #3:  Policy Updates:

Mr. Hub Jordan, Director of Child Welfare presented the policy updates to the Board.

Policies presented:  School and Student Safety (FILE: EBBB Cf:  EBBC, JCDAF), Emergency Crisis Management (FILE:  EBBC Cf: EBB, EBBB, and Behavioral Health Services for Students ( FILE: JGCF Cf: IDDF, JG   Cf: JGC, JR)

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to add to the September 11th agenda for approval.

 

 Item# 4:  Report from Finance Committee

Vernon Travis, Jr., Chairperson for the Finance Committee reported to the Board on the budget for the 2018-2019 budget presented by Tim Ward, Director of Finance during the Finance Committee. Mr. Travis recommended the budget be placed on the September 11th agenda for approval.

 

Item #5: Report from Salary/Personnel:

Vernon Travis, Chairperson for the Salary Personnel Committee reported to the Board the topics presented to the committee by Personnel Director, Mike Kay.   

 

Assistant Superintendent/Personnel Director, Mike Kay reported to the committee the September, 2018 Personnel Changes to be approved.  Mr. Travis recommended the personnel changes be put on the September 11th board meeting for approval.  Mr. Kay also discussed a vacant nurse position and the student count.

 

Item #6:  Superintendent’s Remarks:

Superintendent James Williams thanked all the representatives from each business participating in the Partners in Education.  He also thanked As a Skinner for his service to the Vernon Parish School System and the Board.

 

Mr. Williams introduced Col. Thomas and he informed the Board on Fort Polk updates along with reopening the Fort Polk Golf Course after updating to the course.  Col.  Thomas reminded the Board of the upcoming September 11 ceremony and invited all to attend.

 

Mr. Williams also discussed the new accountability scores and Renita Page presented details to be concerned about.   Mr. Williams discussed safety assessment of the schools to be done.  He informed the Board of the next Board meeting on Tuesday, September 11th and the Curriculum meeting at 9:30 am.

 

Item#7:  Memorial Resolutions:

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of June Coney who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Coney was employed by the Vernon Parish School Board as a teacher at the Optional School; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Coney was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to  the family of Eula Fontenot Causey who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Causey was the Mother of Rene’ Causey Duhon, Sales Tax Secretary for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Causey was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Boyd Roland Booty who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Booty was a retired Teacher, Assistant Principal, and Curriculum Supervisor of the Vernon Parish School Board, and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Booty was the Husband of retired Vernon Parish School Board Teacher, Johnnie Mae Booty; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Booty was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS,  the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Edmond E. LaCaze, Jr. who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS,  Mr. LaCaze was the Husband of retired Paraprofessional, Margaret LaCaze, Father of former Teacher, Donnis Poe, Grandfather of Amy Florendo presently teaching and Father-in-Law of retired Teacher, Coach,  Assistant Principal,  Principal, Paul Poe all employed by the Vernon Parish School System; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. LaCaze was a long time resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Oleane Singletary who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Singletary was a retired cafeteria technician for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Singletary was the Aunt of District 5 School Board Member, Shad Stewart; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
