THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. VICE- PRESIDENT VERNON TRAVIS, JR. CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

ABSENT: ANGIE DAVIS, JIM SEAMAN, RANDY MARTIN, COL TOMAS
There was also absent Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by JOHN BLANKENBAKER
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by JOHN BLANKENBAKER
Item # 1: Approval of 8-2-18 Minutes
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the August 2, 2018 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Item # 2: Budget Amendments related to Personnel Changes
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to approve the budget amendments related to personnel changes.
Item # 3: Authorization to pay claims
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
Item # 4: Performance Contracts
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the performance contracts.
Item #5: Policy Changes
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to approve the Vernon Parish School Board Policy Changes presented at the August 2nd meeting.
Item # 6: Purchase of Software Program
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve to piggyback on Franklin Parish School Board’s request for proposals (RFP) to purchase software program.
Item #7: State Travel Pay Guidelines
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to adopt the state travel pay guidelines.
Item #8: Head Start Update
Director of Head Start, Curtis Clay reported to the Board on the progress of the Head Start program and the plans for growth for the 2018-2019 school year. He informed the Board of the new Head Start sites and the increases for Head Start teachers and paraprofessionals in his department.
Item #9:Report on Athletic Committee Meeting
Shad Stewart, Chairperson for the Athletic Committee reported to the Board on the information give by Hub Jordan. The following topics were discussed:
l. Quarterly meeting dates
2. CECP Coaches
3. Coaching Assignments
4. Football Schedules
5. Reclassification Year
6. Monthly meeting with Athletic Directors
7. Parish Basketball Tournament (Nov. 19-21 at LHS)
8. Baseball and Softball Jamborees
9. Track Update
Item # 10: Updates from Vernon Parish School Board Directors
Superintendent, James Williams introduced the Directors and each one gave an update on their job duties, goals, and purpose for the 2018-2019 school year.
Item # 11: Superintendent’s Remarks
Superintendent, James Williams thanked the Directors for their presentations and all their hard work opening and preparing for the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Williams also complemented the Directors for their participation at the “Cafeteria Conversation” meeting held at Parkway Elementary and how proud he is of all his employees and how everyone does their part to make the Vernon Parish School Board successful.
Item #12: Memorial Resolutions
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Roger D. Johnson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was the Father-in-Law of Kimberly Harper who is an elementary teacher at Pitkin High School; and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Verna Ray who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Ray was the Mother of Lanan James, bus driver at Rosepine Elementary School and Grandmother of Tamara Kay, teacher at Evans High School; and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board with to express their sympathy to the family of Louise Jeter who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Jeter was a retired cook at Hicks High School; and
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no other business the meeting was adjourned.
