THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

Item # 1: April 10, 2018 Minutes

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of  the April 10, 2018  regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes

 

Item # 2:  Bids for bread, milk and juice for the 2018-2019 school year

Finance Director, Tim Ward presented the bids for bread, milk and juice for the 18-19 school year.

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept the bid from Flowers Bread Company for bread.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to accept the bid from Oak Farms for milk and juice.

 

Item # 3: Bids for janitorial/cafeteria supplies for 2018-2019 school year

Tim Ward, Finance Director presented the janitorial and cafeteria supplies bid submission.

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept the lowest overall bid by janitorial/cafeteria supplies.

 

Item #4:  Food Service Quotation Calendar for 2018-2019

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.

 

Item # 5:  Student Recognition

Students from the following schools were recognized for their accomplishments:

 

Vernon Middle School

Rosepine Elementary

Anacoco Elementary

Leesville High School

Leesville Junior High

 

Item# 6:  Vernon Parish School Board Policy Updates

Mr. Hub Jordan, Child Welfare Director, discussed the following policy updates with the Board: 

 

FILE: EFA-R, EFBGA, EFA and JCDAF. 

 

The Board decided to continue discussion and review on May 8th meeting.

 

Item # 7:  School Wellness Policy (FILE: JGB)

Mr. Jordan discussed the School Wellness Policy with the Board and the procedures for healthy and safe developmental and social success.  No action required for the School Wellness Policy.

 

Item # 8:  Headstart Policy/Procedure Update/ Content Area Plan

Mr. Curtis Clay, Director of Headstart gave an update on progress and growth in the Headstart program.  He also informed the Board that a copy of the completed Content Area Plan is available for review in the Superintendent’s office.

 

Item #9:  Report from Salary Personnel Meeting

Mr. Vernon Travis, Chairperson for the Salary Personnel Committee, gave an overview of Mr. Mike Kay’s report at the meeting.  Mr. Kay discussed the following: Personnel changes for May, 2018, Naming Lists for 2018-2019, reminder of deadline for Annual Financial Disclosure Statements for 2017 and a review of the Student Rights information.

 

Item # 10:  Finance Committee

Finance Director, Tim Ward  discussed the following budget information:

 

Fiscal Year 2017-2018 Budget Adjustments

 

Revised Budget – General Operating Fund May, 2018 for fiscal year ending June 30, 2018

 

Item # 11:  Superintendent’s Remarks

Superintendent James Williams commended Vernon Parish students for their achievements for the 2017-2018 school year.   He also thanked the parents and schools for their encouragement in assisting students in their accomplishments.  He also congratulated the softball and baseball teams for a successful year.

 

Superintendent Williams reminded the Board of the event to be held at Fort Polk Showboat today at 4:30 PM to honor Vernon Parish teachers of the year, students of the year and principals of the year.  Mr. Williams reminded the Board of the following: 

 

The Academic Achievement Awards Banquet on May 7th at 6:00 PM to be held at East Leesville Baptist Church Life Center,  graduation dates and times and disclosure statement due date.

 

Mr. Williams congratulated the soft ball and baseball teams.

 

Item # 12: Memorial Resolutions

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board,   the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Donald Bernard McRae who recently passed away; and         

WHEREAS, Mr. McRae was the brother of Joy Fondren, a retired teacher for the Vernon Parish School Board and the brother-in-law of the former Reverand Homer Fondren,  retired bus driver for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. McRae was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the member of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Bernard Alfred Boyd who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Boyd was the husband of retired bus driver, Billie Jean Boyd; and           

WHEREAS, Mr. Boyd was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED  that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Gordon James who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. James was the husband of LaNan James, lease bus driver at Rosepine Elementary School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. James was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, Jr., seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                        WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Larry Gardner who recently pass away; and

                        WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner was the husband of Leesville High School paraprofessional, Nancy Gardner; and

                        WHEREAS, Mr. Gardner was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

                        BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board,  the meeting was adjourned.
