THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT ANGIE DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

Item # 1:

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 13, 2018 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Item #2:

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to adopt a resolution that the Vernon Parish School Board does request the withdrawal of funds from the State Treasury to be used as specified in our recently approved EEF plan for Tobacco Settlement funds.

 

Item #3:

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper.  Mr. Tim Ward presented three bids: Veritiv - $23.55 per case, Contract Paper Group - $23.14 per case and Economical Janitoral - $23.10 per case.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Economical Janitorial.

 

Item # 4:

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to advertise for janitorial/cafeteria supplies for the 2018-2019 school year.

 

Item # 5:

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to advertise for bread, milk and juice for the 2018-2019 school year.

 

Item # 6:

Mr. Williams introduced the Principals and Art Teachers from the schools of the LSBA Art Contest Winners.  The West Leesville Elementary winner is Matthew Koury, the Leesville Junior High winner is Annabelle Johnson and the Leesville High School winner is Nicole Naral.

 

Item # 7:

Mr. Curtis Clay, Head Start Director, gave an update on Head Start enrollment.  There were no new policies or procedures.

 

Item # 8:

Mr. Mike Kay, Assistant Superintendent, gave the Board a copy of the 2018-2019 School Calendar voted on by employees.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to add to the April 10th agenda for approval.

 

Item # 9:

Bill Lohman, Technology Supervisor gave an update on the proposed E-rate funding.  He informed the Board of the savings and how the money would be used to upgrade technology and communications.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to add to the April 10th agenda for approval.

Item # 10:

Vernon Travis gave a report from the Salary/Personnel Committee meeting.  He informed the Board of the personnel changes for April and gave an update on safety measures being completed in our schools.

 

Item # 11: Superintendent’s Remarks

Superintendent James Williams welcomed Col. Thomas and asked him to give an update on Fort Polk events.  Col. Thomas informed the Board of the Operations Group, JRTC & Fort Polk BOX TOUR to be held on April 28th from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM.  He encouraged all to attend to see how the soldiers operate and passed out a flyer concerning the event.

 

Col. Thomas congratulated the Teachers of the Year and expressed his appreciation to their hard work and dedication to their profession.

 

Renita Page, Curriculum Director, addressed the Board about the upcoming “Night of Discovery” to be held at Leesville High School on April 9th at 6:00 P.M.  “Night of Discovery” is a program to help high school students prepare for the future and to inform high school students of the academic opportunities available to them.

 

Superintendent Williams informed the Board of the progress being made on the school safety in-service and procedures. Mr. Williams informed the Board of the next meetings.

 

The next board meeting will be 10:00 on April 10th, Curriculum Meeting on April 10th at 9:00, and school board pictures on April 10th after the board meeting.

 

Item # 12: Memorials

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Tressie Mae Williamson who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Williamson was a long-time volunteer substitute teacher and the wife of Douglas Williamson former teacher, coach and counselor at Simpson High School.

WHEREAS, Ms. Williamson was a resident of Simpson, LA; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Luther Carver who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Carver was a former employee of the Vernon Parish School Board; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Carver was a resident of Vernon Parish; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Debra Brandon Huffman who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman was related to Doug Brandon, Ward I Board Member, and

WHEREAS, Ms. Huffman was a previous resident of Vernon Parish; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
