THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the February 1, 2018 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Item # 2:  Employee of the Month

Tim Ward, Finance Director introduced Rodney Taylor of Taylor & Sons Insurance, sponsor for Employee of the Month.  Mr. Taylor presented Kayla Hopkins, Jr. High math teacher from Hornbeck High School an award for Employee of the Month.  Mr. Raymond Jones, Principal of Hornbeck was also present to thank Ms. Hopkins for her dedication and hard work at his school.

 

Item # 3:

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by David Detz, the Board approved the budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

Item # 4:

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Item # 5:

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to accept employee retirements.

 

Item # 6:

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve Headstart Policies/Procedures.

2.  Financial Procedure Manual

 

Item # 7:

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by the Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to receive bids on three (3) buses that have come off our lease program.

On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept bids for buses meeting specifications.

 

Item # 8: Curriculum Committee Meeting Report

Curriculum Committee chairperson, Jackie Self reported to the Board on the updates on accountability and testing presented by Directors Anne Smith and Renita Page.  Both Directors have been working with principals and faculty at all schools in Vernon Parish to inform them of the ESSA Accountability updates.

 

Item # 9: Athletic Committee Meeting Report

Mr. Shad Stewart, Athletic Committee chairperson for 2018 reported on athletic updates given in the committee meeting by Mr. Hub Jordan, Athletic Director.  Mr. Jordan discussed basketball power ranking, baseball/softball schedules and jamborees.  Incentives for head coaches in the future were presented and will be discussed at the next Athletic Committee meeting May 8th. Mr. Jordan also gave an update on the parish basketball tournament, the LHSAA convention, parish drug screening and parish track meet March 22 at Pickering High School.

 

Item # 10: Superintendent’s Remarks:

Superintendent Williams welcomed Ms. Ann Causey with the Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce, Rodney Taylor with Taylor and Sons, Insurance and Assistant District Attorney, Terry Lambright.  Mr. Williams informed the Board of the next meeting to be held on March 8th.  He also reminded the Board of the Louisiana School Board Association Annual Conference to be held in Baton Rouge on February 28 – March 2, the Quiz Bowl to be held at the Leesville First Baptist Church February 15th, and Board picture day on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at the Central Office.

 

Item # 11: Memorial Resolutions

On motion of Vernon Travis, Jr., seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Mary Alice Roberts who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Roberts was the mother of Tammie Allardyce, Finance Secretary, Central Office and the wife of Owen Keith Roberts, custodian at Rosepine High School; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Roberts was a resident of Rosepine, LA and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Todd Woods who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Woods was the son of the late Bobby Woods and Linda Woods a volunteer for the Vernon Parish School Board.

            WHERE, Mr. Woods was a graduate of Leesville High School and a resident of Leesville, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Tommy Lewis Spears who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Spears was the father of retired teacher Randie Strother, grandfather of Mandie Johnson, Head Nurse for Vernon Parish School Board, and grandfather of Whitnie Perkins, a teacher at Pitkin High School.  Mr. Spears was a former bus driver at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Spears was a resident of Pitkin, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to his family and friends at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Mavis Berkley who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Berkley was the aunt of Naomi Roy, retired paraprofessional, Dianne Stratton, retired teacher and Linda Williams, retired teacher of the Vernon Parish School Board;  and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Berkley was a retired paraprofessional employed at Hicks High School; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Berkley was a resident of Vernon Parish and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
