THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by DAVID DETZ
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the December 12, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to name the Leesville Daily Leader as the Official Journal of the Vernon Parish School System.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to authorize the Superintendent to request and sign all Federal Funding, P.L. 81-874 for the Vernon Parish School Board.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to accept employee retirements.
Mr. Curtis Clay, Director of Head Start presented information for approval to the Board.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the Head Start Policies and Procedures listed below:
1. Vernon Parish Head Start Income Eligibility Procedures
2. Vernon Parish Head Start Child Abuse Policy and Procedures
3. Vernon Parish Head Start Child Attendance and Tardiness Policy and Procedures
4. Vernon Parish School Board & Head Start Personnel Policies
Vernon Travis gave an update on the Salary/Personnel Committee meeting. Mike Kay, Assistant Superintendent presented the January personnel changes to the Board.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
Tom Neubert, Director of Transportation/Maintenance/Custodians/ and Nurses, presented an update from the 9:00 am Transportation Committee Meeting. He discussed maintenance projects ongoing and completed in the schools. He also discussed transportation issues and the need for buses.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to add to the January 16th agenda to advertise for bids for the purchase option of three buses that have been on lease and to advertise to purchase eight new buses.
On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to add to the January 16th agenda to exercise the option to advertise for a Maintenance Worker for the Transportation Department for bus maintenance, parts stocker, helper for the full time mechanic.
Anne Smith and Renita Page, Directors of Curriculum presented the 2017-2018 Pupil Progression Plan justification of changes at the 9:30 am Salary/Personnel Committee Meeting.
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to add to the agenda for approval at the January 16th agenda.
Mr. Hub Jordan, Director of Child Welfare & Attendance – Athletics, Counselors, and Drug Free Coordinator informed the Board on new and updated policies.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the policies at the January 16th Board meeting.
Superintendent James Williams welcomed all visitors and the Board. He informed the Board of the next Board meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. There will be no committee meetings. Colonel Thomas was not in attendance.
Mr. Williams asked the Board to look over the committee meeting list and decide on the chairperson for each committee.
Mr. Williams thanked the Curriculum Directors for their hard work and dedication on the Pupil Progression. He also thanked all school and school board employees for all the hard work they do.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Shirley Yvonne Roberts Burns, “Kitty Burns” who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Burns was a retired teacher for the Vernon Parish School System; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Burns was a resident of Leesville, LA and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board with to express their sympathy to the family of Bonita Cochran who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Cochran was a retired cafeteria technician at Anacoco High School and Anacoco Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Cochran was a resident of Anacoco, LA and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Nofel Basco who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Basco was the father-in-law of Gail Basco a bus driver at Simpson High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Basco was a resident of Flatwoods, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board with to express their sympathy to the family of Earl Elijah Haymon who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Haymon was a long time resident of Vernon Parish and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Louvenia LaCaze who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. LaCaze was the grandmother of Boo Davis, husband of Angie Davis; and
WHEREAS, Ms. LaCaze was a resident of Hicks, LA and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
