THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Vernon Travis

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vernon Travis

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Angie Davis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the September 12, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Mr. Curtis Clay, Head Start Director, reported on policy council rules of order, election of officers and State Department training on October 10, 2017.

 

Mr. Curtis Clay reported on updates with the Head Start Program and the accomplishments made with funding for the extended Head Start day.

 

Mr. Hub Jordan,  Child Welfare & Attendance Director, Athletics, Counselors and Drug Free Coordinator, reported on new policy updates, corporal punishment and use of sunscreen and student fees, fines and charges and explained  all.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted on the recommendation to accept two performance contracts, one for Assistant Principal at Pickering High School and one for Technology Administrator for the Central Office.

 

Mr. William Lohman, Technology Administrator, reported on plans for the technology department’s changes within their department working together and new ideas on making technology procedures more accommodating. He also discussed funding information for a new phone plan.

 

Colonel Thomas informed the Board of the meeting held on the 12th with the military dependants which he felt was a successful meeting.  Colonel Thomas discussed plans to have a Town Hall meeting with parents at Fort Polk to listen to their ideas on different topics.

 

Mr. James Williams, Superintendent, discussed the Head Start training on October 10th after the board meeting with Kahree Wahid to be conducting.  He reminded the Board of the Curriculum meeting on October 10th at 9:00 and the Board member training on November 2nd with Mr. Guice. Mr. Williams also discussed the Industrial Tax Exemption Program.

 

Mr. Williams asked Mr. Mike Kay to report on Ag Awareness Day sponsored by the Cattleman’s Association.  Mr. Kay reported that the Ag Awareness Day located at the Vernon Parish Forestry Festival was informative and educational for future students interested in careers connected with this program.

 

Mr. Kay also introduced the Vernon Parish Forestry Queen, the Louisiana Rodeo Queen and the Vernon Parish Lyons Club Rodeo Queen.

 

Anne Smith discussed receiving the DoDea grant and benefits for our students.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Argus Moore who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was the Father of Christi Bowling, a teacher at Leesville High School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Moore was a resident of Many, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

 

On motion of James Seaman, seconded by the Board; the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Ellen Katherine Remsing who recently pass away; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Remsing was the Grandmother of Kristie Beasley, Principal of West Leesville Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Remsing was a resident of Dayton, TX and will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution to be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, Jr., seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Donald Vester Crum who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crum was a former special education teacher and a wood shop instructor at Leesville High School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Crum was a resident of Lake Charles, LA at the time of his passing and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution to be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Johnnie Thomas, Jr. who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas was the Father of Charles E. Thomas, a cafeteria technician for over twenty years, employed at Vernon Middle School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas was a resident of Leesville, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a cop of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Eugene Wayne Cavanaugh who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Cavanaugh was a lifelong resident of Leesville, LA and a graduate of Leesville High School.  Mr. Cavanaugh served his community as Vernon Parish Tax Assessor for 24 years, Board Member and Past President of the Chamber of Commerce and Board Member and Past President of Council on Aging.

WHEREAS, Mr. Cavanaugh will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Leamon Martin who recently passed away; and           

WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was a former bus driver for the Vernon Parish School System; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was the Father-in-law of Cheryl Martin a retired teacher of Vernon Parish School System and;

WHEREAS, Mr. Martin was a resident of Anacoco, LA and will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
