A PUBLIC HEARING WAS HELD TO ALLOW FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS ON 2017

 

MILLAGE RATES.

 

THERE WERE NO COMMENTS.  THE HEARING WAS ADJOURNED.

 

 

THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Jon Welch.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randy Martin.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the August 3, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Tim Ward, Gerald Cooley and Asa Skinner on behalf of the Vernon Parish School Board, recognized Meridan Land and Mineral for their generosity for the donation of land to Hicks High School - this land will be used for a ball park.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to accept the following retirements:

Perrilyn, James, HS teacher/ELE

Jeane, Pamela, teacher/WLE

Bennett, Quinda, secretary/CO

 

Jackie Self reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and Anne Smith discussed Professional Development for classroom teachers.  This is funded by Rapides Foundation Grants and Title II and IV.  Mrs. Smith also stated that high quality, standards-aligned curriculum utilized in every classroom and quality assessments used as benchmark assessments are additional factors in improving student achievement.  Renita Page noted that Social Studies scores should be released soon and School Performance Scores are set to be released in the fall.  Mrs. Page also discussed dual enrollment and also expanding this program.

 

Angie Davis reported that the Athletic Committee had met and Mr. Jordan gave updates on the Football Jamboree as well as updates on all sports. 

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for a promotional principal position at Pickering High School.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to adopt the adjusted millage rate(s) for the tax year 2017.

 

VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD

 

RESOLUTION NO. 1

 

                      BE IT RESOLVED by the VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD District of the Parish of Vernon, Louisiana, in a public meeting held on August 8, 2017 which meeting was conducted in accordance with the Open Meetings Law and the additional requirements of Article VII, Section 23(C) of the Louisiana Constitution and R.S. 47:1705(B), that the following adjusted millage rates be and they are hereby levied upon the dollar of the assessed valuation of all property subject to ad valorem taxation within said Parish for the year 2017, for the purpose of raising revenue:

                     The foregoing resolution was read in full, the roll was called on the adoption thereof, and the resolution was adopted by the following votes:

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to adopt the adjusted millage rate(s) after Reassessment and roll forward the Millage rate(s) not to exceed the prior years’ maximum authorized millage for the tax year 2017.

 

On motion of Shad Stewart, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to adopt other millages or taxes.

 

VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD

 

RESOLUTION NO. 2

 

                      BE IT RESOLVED by the VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD District of the Parish of Vernon, Louisiana, in a public meeting held on August 08, 2017, which meeting was conducted in accordance with the Open Meetings Law and the additional requirements of Article VII, Section 23(C) of the Louisiana Constitution and R.S 47:1705(B), that the taxing district voted to increase the millage rates, but not in excess of the prior year’s maximum rates, on all taxable property shown on the official assessment roll for the year 2017, and, when collected, the revenues from said taxes shall be used for the specific purposes for which said taxes have been levied. On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Rebecca Nichols who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nichols was the mother of Robin Horton, pre-school homebound teacher; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Nichols was a longtime resident of Leesville before moving to DeRidder and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Christine Johnson who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson was the mother-in-law of Chelon Johnson and Wenda Johnson, both teachers at West Leesville Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
