THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Rev. Craig Forque.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jackie Self.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the July 11, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

Fort Polk Progress and the Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce recognized Vernon Parish Schools for their accomplishments.  Mike Reese, on behalf of Fort Polk Progress, the Chamber of Commerce and local businesses, presented each school with a gift card.  Mr. Reese expressed his appreciation to the teachers of Vernon Parish as well as administrators and thanked them for a job well done.

 

Joey Whiddon presented an update on the Community Eligibility Provision School Lunch Program. 

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to receive bids for a used bus as follows:

 

Ross Bus Sales - $35,400

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept this bid if specifications are met.

 

Jackie Self reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed personnel changes for August.  Mr. Kay discussed personnel changes for August and vacancies to be filled.  The Salary/Personnel Committee recommended advertising for a promotional principal position at Pickering High and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by David Detz, the Board approved this to be added to the August 8th Agenda.  The Salary/Personnel Committee also recommended Performance Contracts be added to the August 8th Agenda for approval and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board approved to add this item.

 

Superintendent Williams reminded Board members of their Disclosure Statements and of the Curriculum Committee meeting at 9:00AM and Athletic Committee meeting at 9:30AM on August 8th.  Colonel Thomas gave an update on Fort Polk and expressed his appreciation for the Cafeteria Conversation held at Parkway for families and students.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Harold Louis Cooley who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was the brother of Gerald Cooley, District Eight Board Member; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish, a graduate of Simpson High School and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Mary Jeane Wingate who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Wingate was a retired secretary at West Leesville Elementary School with twenty four years of dedicated service; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Wingate was a resident of DeRidder and she will be greatly missed by her friends and family; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Dorothy Mitcham who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitcham was a former custodian at Evans High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitcham was a resident of Anacoco and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

            

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jennifer Edwards Rushworth who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Rushworth was a former paraprofessional at Vernon Middle School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Rushworth was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Virginia Fletcher who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Fletcher was a retired bus driver at Pickering Schools; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Fletcher was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
