THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  VICE-PRESIDENT DAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Gerald Cooley.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gerald Cooley.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 9, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Joey Whiddon, Transportation Director, recognized Susan Wise as PCAL Bus Driver of The Year.  Mrs. Wise is a bus driver at Simpson High School with twenty years of service.

 

Charlotte Cooper presented an update on Special Education Performance.

 

Anne Smith discussed the Rapides Foundation Grants and noted the Effective Schools Grant and the Healthy Behaviors School Partnership Grant Resolution would be placed on the June 6th Agenda for adoption.

 

Hub Jordan discussed new/revised policies (Child Abuse, Purchasing and Bids and Quotations) and these will be placed on the June 6th Agenda for approval.

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mike Kay discussed personnel changes for June.  Mike Kay discussed Performance Contracts and noted they would be ready for approval in July.  The Committee also approved to advertise for a principal at Evans High School, an assistant principal at Leesville High School and a principal at Parkway Elementary – this will be placed on the June 6th Agenda.  Tim Ward discussed the Sales Tax Supplement and the Ordinance that is followed to distribute the money.  Testing stipends were discussed and will be addressed again in July.

 

Superintendent Williams expressed his appreciation to students, teachers, administrators and Board Members for their dedication and hard work for the school year. He also noted that the MFP Budget Proposal passed the House Appropriation Committee and will be before the House Floor today.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Robert Moss who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Moss was the husband of Frances Moss, retired paraprofessional at West Leesville and the father of Vicky Dowden, teacher at West Leesville and Cindy Dowden, teacher at Anacoco High; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Moss was a 1955 Graduate of Leesville High School and a longtime resident of Vernon Parish; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Moss will long be remembered for his dedication to the Louisiana Lion’s Camp and his devotion to children; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Ida Kirby who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Kirby was the mother of Gertrude Birchette, teacher at Vernon Middle, David Kirby, cook at Leesville High and Patricia Miller, cook at Parkway Elementary; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Kirby was a resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O LU T I O N

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Alton “A.B.” Kay who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Kay was the husband of Marie Kay, retired teacher and the father of Penny Williams, retired teacher; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Kay was a 1942 Graduate of Leesville High School and a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Lori Stillwell Phillips who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips was a long time educator in Vernon Parish and a former counselor at Simpson High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Phillips was very active in Relay For Life and raising monies for research of Metastatic Breast Cancer; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to extend condolences to the family of Garsie James who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. James was the father-in-law of Steve Thomas, retired principal at Rosepine High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. James was a resident of DeRidder and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Ranita Bolton Adams who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Adams was a Graduate of Pickering High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Adams was a resident of San Antonio, a former Vernon Parish resident and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Carolyn Taylor who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Taylor was the daughter of Annie Trull, former bus driver at Pickering Elementary; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Taylor was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to extend their sympathy to the family of Charles Stimac who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Stimac was the husband of the late Linda Stimac, former teacher at Leesville High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Stimac was a lifelong resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to his family.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
