THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Vernon Travis.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vernon Travis.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 11, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Students from the following schools were recognized and congratulated by the Board for their achievements at State Level:
Anacoco Elementary School
Vernon Middle School
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Angie Davis, the Board voted to receive bids for bread, milk and juice. One bid was received from Flowers Baking for bread and on motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted unanimously to accept this bid. On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted unanimously to accept the low bid from Oak Farms for milk and juice.
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper. On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board unanimously voted to accept the low bid from Unisource for copier paper.
On motion of David Detz, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to receive bids for cafeteria/janitorial supplies. On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted unanimously to accept the low bids for cafeteria/janitorial supplies if specifications are met.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar for 2017-2018.

Mr. Hub Jordan discussed the revised School Wellness Policy and this will be added to the May 9th Agenda for approval.
Curtis Clay presented the Headstart Report and noted that the Headstart Area Content Plan will be on the May 9th Agenda for approval.
Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mike Kay discussed personnel changes for May and noted no new employees. The Committee discussed the Personnel Transfer Policy, Military Dependent Count, and Administrator Contracts. The Committee also approved to advertise for principal positions at Anacoco High, Vernon Middle and an assistant principal position at Hornbeck – these items will be placed on the May 9th Agenda for Board approval.
Vernon Travis reported that the Finance Committee had met Tim Ward discussed the Revised General Operating Fund and the changes in state and federal funds. The Committee voted to recommend approval of the revised budget to the full Board – this will be placed on the May 9th Agenda.
Colonel Athey noted that the recognition ceremony for Students, Teachers and Principals of the Year was a great success and demonstrated the excellence and the great work being done in the Vernon Parish School District. Superintendent Williams noted that high school students would be recognized on May 9th for their achievements at state level. Superintendent Williams also stated it is an honor that the Change of Command Ceremony for Colonel Athey will be held at Parkway Elementary School on June 13th – this is the first time a Change of Command Ceremony has been held at a school in Vernon Parish.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Truman D. Ellis who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ellis was the husband of Faye Ellis, retired Principal from East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Ellis was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of James Andrew Goins who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Goins was the father of Crystal Fontenot, cook at Rosepine Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Goins was a resident of the Knight community and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Sally Alicia Fertitta who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Fertitta was a 2001 graduate of Leesville High School where she was very involved in many extra- curricular activities; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Fertitta was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Carissa Rayne Gillis who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Carissa was an 8th grader at Hicks High School; and
WHEREAS, Carissa was a resident of the Hicks/Hineston area and she will be remembered for her courage and inspiration; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Austin Chandler who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler was a 2014 graduate of Hicks High School and he will be remembered for his kindness and willingness to help others; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; and
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
