THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Robert Pynes.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robert Pynes.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 6, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

The following Outstanding School Support Personnel were recognized and congratulated by the Board:

 

Elementary – Carmen Holder, Pickering Elementary

Jr. High – Julie Lawrence, Pickering High

High School – Alice Haymon, Anacoco High

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve the Vernon Parish School Calendar for 2017-2018.

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to accept the bid from for the construction at Pickering Schools.  Vernon Travis voted NAY on this motion.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted a resolution to accept land donation at Hicks from Meridan Land and Mineral Corporation.  Meridian Land and Mineral Corporation has requested a fence to establish boundaries and also requested that if the school no longer uses the land that it revert back to Meridian.

resolution of the Meridian Land and Mineral Corporation at its meeting held

vivos unto VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD, a political subdivision of the State of

Louisiana, herein represented by James T. Williams, Superintendent, being duly

authorized by resolution of the Vernon Parish School Board at its regular business

meeting held on ___________ ___ , a certified copy of which is

attached hereto and made a part hereof, hereby appearing for the purpose of accepting the

same, of the following:

A 7.75+/- acre tract located in the Southwest Quarter of the Northwest

Quarter and in the Northwest Quarter of the Southwest Quarter, Section 3,

Township 2 North, Range 6 West, Louisiana Meridian, Northwest Land

District, Vernon Parish, Louisiana, described as follows:

Commencing at a 1" iron pipe marking the Southwest comer of the

Southwest Quarter of the Northwest Quarter, Section 3, Township 2

North, Range 6 West; thence proceed South 88 degrees 51 minutes 24

seconds East, a distance of285.85 feet to a point in Hicks School Road

marking the POINT OF BEGINNING of the tract to be described;

Thence turn left and proceed North 04 degrees 13 minutes 50 seconds

West, along said road, a distance of 481.82 feet to a nail;

Thence turn right and proceed South 88 degrees 51 minutes 24 seconds

East, a distance of25.04 feet to a Y2" iron rod located on the apparent east

right of way line of Hicks School Road;

Thence continue South 88 degrees 51 minutes 24 seconds East, a distance

of 486.78 feet to a W' iron rod;

Thence tum right and proceed South 00 degrees 46 minutes 53 seconds

West, a distance of 730.59 feet to a W' iron rod located on the apparent

north right ofway line ofLa. Hwy. 121 ;

Thence tum right and proceed North 81 degrees 30 minutes 30 seconds

West, along said apparent right of way line, a distance of 456.97 feet to a

nail in Hicks School Road;

Thence turn right and proceed North 04 degrees 13 minutes 50 seconds

West, along said road, a distance of 193.28 feet to the POINT OF

BEGINNING, together with all buildings, structures and improvements

thereon.

The above described tract contains 7.75 acres and is more particularly

indicated on Certificate of Survey by William J. Wood, Jr., dated February

22, 2017.

It is hereby agreed by and between the parties that Grantee, Vernon Parish School

Board, shall erect a fence along the North and East property lines of the hereinabove

described property.

It is further agreed by and between the parties that should the hereinabove

described property cease to be used by the Vernon Parish School Board at any time, then

in that event, the ownership of the herein donated property shall revert to the Donor,

Meridian Land and Mineral Corporation.

The parties hereto hereby estimate the value of said donated property to be

SIXTY SEVEN THOUSAND FOUR HUNDRED AND N0/100 ($67,400.00)

DOLLARS.

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Superintendent Williams extended his appreciation to support personnel in the schools and thanked them for their dedication and hard work.  Superintendent Williams also noted the Academic Banquet on May 1st and the Financial Disclosure Statements due May 15th.  Joey Whiddon, Transportation/Food Service Director, stated that the Vernon Parish School System is participating in a grant application that could potentially secure school buses that run on CNG at no cost to purchase.  These buses would replace 2011and older models.  On April 19th   from 10:00-1:00, there will be a CNG bus at the CNG site for a fueling demo as well as a ride and drive demo. 

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Murvis Walker who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Walker was a US Army World War II Veteran, having fought at the Battle of The Bulge; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Walker was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Thomas “Tommy” Perkins who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Perkins was the father of Tracy Perkins, secretary at Pickering Elementary School; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Perkins was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
