THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

 

STEVE WOODS, PRESIDENT

ANGIE DAVIS, VICE-PRESIDENT

ROBERT PYNES JR.

JOHN BLANKENBAKER

ABSENT:           JACKIE SELF, DAVID DETZ, COL. DAVID ATHEY

 

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Jeff Coleman.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Seaman.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 2, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve a resolution for continuing the Consolidated Application for program funding for Titles I, II, III, IV, IDEA and IDEA Pre-School.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to receive bids to sell a used Headstart bus.  One bid was received from Alexis Holt for $500.00 and on motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to accept this bid of $500.00 to sell the used Headstart bus.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to approve the following Leave Without Pay request:

 

Green, Jamie, Title I paraprofessional/Parkway-LWOP 4-11-17/5-25-17

 

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the following Headstart Policies/Procedures:

 

VPHS Self Assessment & VPHS 2017-2018 Budget

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Superintendent Williams requested Doug Brandon give the Curriculum Committee Report in the absence of Jackie Self.  Dr. Brandon stated that all 3rd and 4th grade students are taking paper-based assessments in ELA, science and social studies.  The testing dates are set by the state and will be May 1-4 for ELA, math and social studies and May 5th for science.

 

All 5-8 grade students will take paper based assessment in science -testing date is May 5th.   All 5-8 students will take computer based assessment in ELA, math and social studies (these subjects are only computer based).  Every Vernon Parish student will be taking the test in the same manner as every student in grades 5-8 in Louisiana.

 

High School students will take End Of Course Tests in Algebra I, Geometry, English II & III, Biology and US History – these tests will be given between April 29th and May 19th.

Superintendent Williams also recognized Vernon Travis and Jim Seaman for receiving the Certificate of Merit from LSBA – this certificate is given to honor those who receive 20 or more CLU’S.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Stella Pough who recently passes away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Pough was the mother of Seneca Johnson, teacher at Leesville High School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Pough was a resident of New Llano and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Kay Francis Stephens who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was the mother of Rebecca Weekley, assistant cafeteria manager at Rosepine Elementary School; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was a longtime resident of Rosepine and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
