THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Jackie Self.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jackie Self.

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the January 10, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

The 2017 Vernon Parish Principals of The Year were recognized as follows:

 

             Elementary – Ramona Bennett – East Leesville Elementary School

             Middle School – Rhonda Roberts – Hicks High School

             High School – Lee Coriell – Simpson High School

 

The 2017 Vernon Parish Teachers of The Year were recognized as follows:

 

             Elementary – Brandi Frey – Rosepine Elementary School

             Middle School – Lois Spurgeon – Leesville Jr. High School

             High School – Summer Peters – Leesville High School

 

Mr. Jordan, Ms. Cooper and Mr. Ward discussed the following new/revised policies and these policies will be placed on the February 7th Agenda for approval:

 

Authorized Signatures – Student Assignment – Administration of Medication – School Admission – Dangerous Weapons – Expectant and Parenting Students

 

Curtis Clay presented the Headstart Report and discussed the Headstart Financial Procedure Manual and Long and Short Term Goals.  These items will be placed on the February 7th Agenda for approval.

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed personnel changes for February.  The non-promotional contract for the assistant principal at Rosepine was approved by the committee to be placed on the February 7th Agenda for approval of the full Board.  Mike Kay also reported that he had reviewed policies with principals and supervisors and also would schedule a Calendar Committee meeting in the near future.

 

Angie Davis reported that the Athletic Committee had met and Mr. Jordan presented the 2017 Softball and Baseball Schedules and Power Ratings for Parish Schools.  Updates were given on the Parish Basketball Tournament and the LHSAA Principal’s Conference.

 

Colonel Athey presented an update for Fort Polk.  Superintendent Williams noted the Finance Committee meeting on Tuesday, February 7th at 9:00.  Superintendent Williams also thanked Colonel Athey for his continued support and dedication to all students of Vernon Parish.

 

On motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Malcolm Jeane who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Jeane was the father of Ronald Jeane, retired maintenance worker, the father-in-law of Paulette Jeane, retired secretary and the grandfather of Landon McKee, maintenance worker; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Jeane was a long time resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Sammie May who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. May was a Vernon Parish retired principal with more than thirty years of dedicated service to the students in Vernon Parish; and

             WHEREAS, Mrs. May was a resident of DeRidder and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of J. P. Monk who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Monk was the husband of Merelene Monk, former cook for Vernon Parish Schools; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Monk was a lifelong resident of Slagle and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Kenneth Cooley who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was the son of Mildred Cooley, retired bus driver at Simpson High, brother of Marie Ross, retired teacher at Hornbeck and Glen Cooley, retired supervisor at the Central Office – Mr. Cooley was also the cousin of Gerald Cooley and Angie Davis, Board Members; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was a 1972 graduate of Simpson High School and a former Vernon Parish Teacher; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Cooley was a resident of Slagle and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Jackie Self, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
