THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Doug Brandon.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Doug Brandon.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the January 5, 2017 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to approve the following Headstart policies/procedures:

 

VPHS Income Eligibility – VPHS Child Abuse Policy & Procedures – VPHS Child Attendance and Tardiness Policy and Procedures – VPSB Personnel Policies

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to approve the following Leave Without Pay requests:

Kreps, Wendy, teacher/AES- LWOP 12-7-16/12-16-16

Green, Jamie, Title I para/Parkway- LWOP 2-14-17/4-10-17

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the non-promotional contract for the principal at Rosepine Elementary School.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Shad Stewart, the Board voted to advertise for a non-promotional assistant principal position at Rosepine High School.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for bids for renovation of Pickering schools.

 

Mr. Jackie Self reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and Mrs. Page and Mrs. Smith presented updates on testing/accountability and elementary school site visits.  It was noted that Vernon Parish improved in three of four areas and had the highest ACT Index in the state.  Mrs. Smith stated that Vernon Parish’s Professional Development Plan was shared with educators across Louisiana at the December 2016 Supervisor and Principal Collaborations.  Vernon Parish was commended for their strong Teacher/Leader Program and high quality curriculum.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Jackie Self, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Superintendent Williams read a Proclamation from Governor John Bell Edwards declaring January as Local School Board Member Recognition Month and expressed his appreciation to all the Board Members for their support and dedication.  Superintendent Williams also noted the LSBA Conference in February and reminded Board Members of their Financial Disclosure Statements.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

             WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Billy Nathan Owens who recently passed away; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Owens was the husband of Lettie Owens, retired teacher and the father of David Kennedy, teacher at Rosepine High and Jamie Bjornberg, counselor at Rosepine High; and

             WHEREAS, Mr. Owens was a resident of Rosepine and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

             BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
