THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by David Detz.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by David Detz.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the December 6, 2016 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Jackie Self, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to name the Leesville Daily Leader as the Official Journal of the Vernon Parish School System.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to authorize the Superintendent to request and sign all Federal Funding, P.L. 81-874 for the Vernon Parish School Board.
Curtis Clay presented the Headstart Report for January and the following policies/procedures will be placed on the January 10th Agenda for approval:
VPHS Income Eligibility – VPHS Child Abuse Policy & Procedures – VPHS Child Attendance and Tardiness Policy and Procedures – VPSB Personnel Policies
Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed personnel changes for January. Mr. Travis also stated that the Salary/Personnel Committee recommended approval to advertise for a non-promotional assistant principal position at Rosepine High School and the approval of a contract for the non –promotional principal position at Rosepine Elementary School – these items will be placed on the January 10th Agenda for approval. Mike Kay gave an overview of the stipends for School Performance Scores, reviewed Transfer/Reduction Policies and substitute pay – No action was taken.
Superintendent Williams reminded Board Members of the January 10th Board meeting and the Curriculum Committee meeting. He also urged Board Members to review policies in their folders and stated that Financial Disclosure Forms are due May 15th. Board Members were asked to talk with Vernon Travis if they were going to the LSBA Conference. Colonel Athey gave an update on Fort Polk.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Justin Coney who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Coney was the son of June Coney, teacher at the Optional Program, and
WHEREAS, Mr. Coney was a resident of Lake Charles and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Marie Spurgeon who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spurgeon was a retired teacher and the wife of James Spurgeon, retired teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spurgeon was a resident of Elmer and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jean Marie Martinez who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Martinez was a retired cook at Anacoco High School with many years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Martinez was a resident of Anacoco and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Carol Paddy who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Paddy was a retired paraprofessional at East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Paddy was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
