THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT DETZ CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Jim Seaman.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jim Seaman.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the June 7, 2016 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to accept the bid from Ross Bus Sales for the purchase of nine (9) buses.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Sandra Whitlock, the Board voted to approve the twenty-five cent (.25) increase in full pay lunch prices and the adjustment of the salad bar. 

 

Renita Page discussed the Rapides Foundation Grants and noted that approval of a Resolution for the Grant Agreement will be placed on the July 12th Agenda.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to receive bids for stadium lighting at Pickering.  Bids will be received and evaluated to insure they are within budget and meet specifications.  The low bid will be presented to the Board on July 12th for approval.

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mike Kay discussed personnel changes for July.  Mr. Travis also noted that the committee was recommending advertising for non-promotional administrative assistant positions at Pickering High School and Hornbeck High School and the principal position at West Leesville Elementary.  These recommendations will be placed on the July 12th Agenda for approval.

 

Gerald Cooley reported that the Transportation Committee had met and reviewed options for purchasing 5 additional buses.  The Committee is recommending approval to purchase 5 buses – this will be placed on the July 12th Agenda.  There was also discussion of contract bus drivers moving to lease drivers.

 

Superintendent Williams thanked Colonel Athey and Ms. Stipes and all the volunteers that helped with the transition from South Polk to Parkway.  Fifty-two soldiers and the Fort Polk Boy Scouts assisted with the move. Colonel Athey also reported that Freedom Fest was a great success with about 10,000 in attendance.

Superintendent Williams reminded Board members of the Ethics Disclosure Notice and of the Board picture being taken on Tuesday, July 12th.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Vada Karlene Morris who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Morris was a retired teacher with thirty-seven years of dedicated teaching service; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Morris had a place in her heart for special needs children and she loved teaching; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of  Bobbie Holder who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Holder was a retired bus driver with over twenty-six years of service and was also the mother-in-law of Carmen Holder, office paraprofessional at Pickering Elementary; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Holder was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board Office wish to extend their condolences to the family of Shelby Harris who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Harris was the wife of Joe Harris, retired teacher at Pickering; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Harris was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOVLED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Sandra Whitlock, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Alfred “Trey” Trosclair III who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Trey was the son of Karen Trosclair, teacher at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Trey was a resident of Pitkin and he will be sadly missed by his family and many friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
