THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. VICE-PRESIDENT WOODS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Doug Brandon.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Doug Brandon.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 8, 2016 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Mr. Randy Lansdale, representative of Cenergistic Energy Conservation, gave an update on energy savings and the progress being made. Mr. Lansdale works with the principals and the energy teams at every school and conducts weekly audits to monitor the progress.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for copier paper.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to advertise for cafeteria and janitorial supplies.
Curtis Clay presented the Headstart Director’s Report.
Mike Kay updated the Flood Relief Response and noted that all schools participated in the flood relief program – fundraisers were held, donations made and some students physically helped with the clean-up or assisting wherever needed.
Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed personnel changes for April. Two positions were absorbed from the resignation/retiree list. No action was required.
Renita Page, Secondary Curriculum Director, presented an update of the District Strategic Plan for Advanced Ed. This will be on the April 12th Agenda for approval by the Board.
Mike Kay presented the final draft of the 2016-2017 calendar and this will be placed on the April 12th Agenda for approval.
Superintendent Williams thanked Colonel Athey for the assistance Fort Polk gave during the flood. Colonel Athey noted that General McGuire’s Change of Command is May 4th at 10:30AM. He also discussed the Box Tour and the Warrior Cajun Fest.
Superintendent Williams congratulated the Anacoco High School Boys Basketball Team for winning the State Championship. Superintendent Williams also noted testing dates and graduation dates for the parish.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Willie Allen who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was a D.A.R.E. Officer for the Vernon Parish Schools; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was active in the community and took great pride in serving the youth of Vernon Parish; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Allen was a resident of Hicks and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jimmie Puckett who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Puckett was the brother of Marion Puckett, retired custodian; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Puckett was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Allen Blady who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blady was the husband of Gertrud Blady, Assistant Principal at Rosepine Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blady was a longtime resident of Rosepine and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Mary Lurlean Ramsey who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Ramsey was the mother of Charlotte Gallemore, Calcasieu Parish Administrative Director of Middle Schools and the mother- in- law of Don Gallemore, Technology Directory at the Central Office; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Ramsey was a resident of Mansfield and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Nathaniel Brown who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a retired custodian at Leesville High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Brown was a longtime resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Merrill Coffman who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Coffman was the brother-in-law of Ginger Stuckey, retired principal at Simpson High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Coffman was a 1977 Graduate of Simpson High School and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Valley Willis who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Willis was the step-daughter of Tammy Willis, paraprofessional at Hicks High School; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Willis was a resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to convey their sympathy to the family of Emmit Smith who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the grandfather of Margaret Nichols, cook at Hicks High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a World War II Veteran, a resident of Hicks and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Jim Seaman on behalf of the entire Board, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Don Fulkerson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Fulkerson was a Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Volunteer with the First Baptist Church in Galatia, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Fulkerson was one of the first responders and will be remembered for his faithful service and dedication; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
