THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT DETZ CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Randi Gleason.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randi Gleason.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 3, 2016 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Mr. Wesley Coffman with the Vernon Parish Cattleman’s Association discussed a Youth Day Event geared toward 4-H and FFA students from all area high schools. This event would be held at the Porter & Sons Ranch from 9:00-1:00 – all students would return to school before the end of the school day.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve the following Leave Without Pay Requests:
Bowen, Margie, sped para- 1-20-16/3-17-16
Miller, Willie, custodian- 10-15-15/3-17-16
Johnson, Gregory, cook- 2-8-16/indefinitely
Brown, Jerry, custodian- 3-18-16/unknown
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the following retirements:
Wilson, Renee, secretary/CO
McCullough, Kathy, bus driver/Pitkin
Wise, Lillian, teacher/Hornbeck
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the Headstart Long and Short Term Goals and Self Assessment.
Vernon Travis reported that the Finance Committee had met and the discussed the lunch program and options available to offset costs. Mr. Ward stated that increased participation with the free/reduced lunch applications would be beneficial and these applications can be completed on-line. Board Members were given guidelines for the Energy Conservation Program. No action was taken.
Randi Gleason reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and Renita Page and Anne Smith gave testing and Grant updates. No action was taken.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
Superintendent Williams noted that several basketball teams were in the play-offs and that they were to be commended for their hard work and determination. Superintendent Williams also reminded Board Members of the next Board Meeting on April 7th.
Colonel Athey stated that he attended the NMSI site visits on Monday with Mrs. Page and administrators and teachers from respective schools. Colonel Athey also stated that the Parkway Elementary walk-thru went very well and that a meeting will be scheduled to discuss the transition stage.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Johnnie Peavy Paliwoda Koenck who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Koenck was the mother of Ed Koenck, Principal at West Leesville Elementary School and the mother-in-law of Leslie Koenck, Curriculum Supervisor at the Central Office; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Koenck was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Bonnie Wise who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wise was a retired bus driver and was the mother-in-law of Susan Wise, bus driver at Simpson High; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wise was a lifelong resident of Simpson and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to extend their condolences to the family of O.C. Haymon who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Haymon was the father of Raymond Haymon, a teacher at Anacoco High School and the father-in-law of Lisa Haymon, teacher at Anacoco Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Haymon was a resident of Anacoco and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Annie Holaway who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Holaway was the wife of G.A. Holaway, retired teacher, the sister-in-law of Nelwyn Bush and the aunt of Keith Bush and Kayla Bush; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Holaway was a long time resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
