THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT DETZ CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Robert Pynes.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robert Pynes.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Jim Seaman, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the February 9, 2016 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Curtis Clay gave the Headstart Directors Report and discussed Long and Short Term Goals and Self Assessment for Headstart which will be placed on the March 8th Agenda.
Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and discussed personnel changes for March. Mike Kay presented two school calendars for 2016-2017 that will be sent to the schools for a vote. Final calendar will be presented in April.
Renita Page discussed the National Math and Science Initiative to increase the number of students taking and earning qualifying scores on Advanced Placement math, science and English exams. Leesville High School, Pickering High School and Rosepine High School were chosen for this program.
Renita Page discussed test preparations and testing dates.
Tom Neubert discussed the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) Program and noted that reported behavior problems were down from the previous year.
Superintendent Williams and the Board welcomed Sandra Whitlock, District 5 Board Member to her first meeting. Colonel Athey noted that General McGuire would be leaving Fort Polk and Change of Command Ceremony will be announced at a later date.
Colonel Athey stated that he had attended the Association of Defense Communities Seminar and also noted that he was looking forward to discussing the transition for Parkway Elementary School.
Superintendent Williams presented certificates to Vernon Travis and Jim Seaman for achieving Louisiana Certified Board Member status. He noted that he and several Board Members attended the LSBA Conference in Baton Rouge.
Superintendent Williams reminded Board Members of the Curriculum Committee meeting on Tuesday at 8:30 and the Finance Committee at 9:00.
On motion of Randi Gleason on behalf of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to send their condolences to the family of Darlene Bennett who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bennett was a former teacher and was the mother of Denise Wills, teacher at Vernon Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bennett was a longtime educator, very active in the community and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Louis Jefferson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson was the father of Cornelia Miller, teacher at Vernon Middle School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Miller was a resident of Leesville and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Vickie Smith who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the father of Amanda Bealer, teacher at East Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a resident of Mittie and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THERFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason on behalf of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L UT I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to send their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Adell Wilbanks who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wilbanks was the mother of Tammy McKenzie, secretary at Hicks High School and Doylan Wilbanks, retired teacher and the mother-in-law of Kay Wilbanks, former District Eight Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wilbanks was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Sandra Whitlock, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Wanda Swain Maricle who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Maricle was the mother of Jerome Maricle, teacher at Anacoco High School and the mother-in-law of Janell Maricle, retired teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Maricle was a longtime resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
