THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT BRANDON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Angie Davis.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Angie Davis.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the July 14, 2015 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Superintendent Williams recognized Mrs. Carolyn Bosley, Principal at Rosepine Elementary School, for being selected as Louisiana Elementary Principal of The Year.  Superintendent Williams, on behalf of the Board, presented Mrs. Bosley with a plaque and thanked her for her dedication, determination and hard work.

 

David Simmons and Lance Wyatt, representatives of Cenergistic Energy Conservation, gave a presentation on lowering energy costs within the schools.

 

Mr. Asa Skinner, District Attorney, discussed the Student Records Policy and clarified the Attorney General’s Opinion.  No action was taken.

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mike Kay reviewed personnel transactions for August.  There was discussion for professional contracts for the assistant principal at Rosepine Elementary and curriculum supervisor at the Central Office.  These contracts will be on the August 11th Agenda for approval.  It was also approved to recommend to the Board to advertise for principal at Anacoco High School.

 

Superintendent Williams reminded Board Members of the Curriculum Committee meeting on August 11th at 9:00AM.  Superintendent Williams also announced that the Vernon Parish School System was the recipient of an almost $1.5 million Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Grant to provide both academic and social-emotional support to five schools within the Vernon Parish School System.  The programs funded by this Grant will assist Vernon Parish in providing the best possible education for each of our students.

 

Colonel Athey expressed his appreciation for the “Cafeteria Conversation” held recently at Fort Polk – about 1100 families attended.  He also added that they were looking forward to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Leesville High School and a ceremony planned in September to honor Carolyn Bosley being selected as Louisiana Elementary Principal of The Year.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Carolyn Buxton who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Buxton was a retired cook and a 1960 Graduate of Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Buxton was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Matthew Fletcher who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was the husband of Marilyn Fletcher, custodian at Pickering Elementary and the son of Patricia Fletcher, paraprofessional at Pickering Elementary; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was a 1988 Graduate of Pickering High School and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Doris Knippers who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Knippers was a retired cook at Hornbeck High School and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Knippers was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods on behalf of the entire Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Honorable James Mitchell who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Judge Mitchell was an avid supporter of our community, our schools and the youth of Vernon Parish; and

            WHEREAS, Judge Mitchell was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Dottie Browning Chapman who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Chapman was a 1958 Graduate of Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Chapman was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Paul R. Smith who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the son of Brian Smith, bus driver at Anacoco; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of the Leesville area and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Kermit Inman who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Inman was the father of Jerry Inman, Resource Officer at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Inman was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
