THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT BRANDON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

ABSENT:       DAVID DETZ, ROBERT PYNES, JR.

 

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Pastor Edgar Evans.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randy Martin.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the June 9, 2015 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Michael Reese addressed the Board regarding the Education Initiative Action Plan, a Partnership of Fort Polk Progress, Vernon Parish Schools, JRTC & Fort Polk and Community Stakeholders.  Mr. Reese also noted that Fort Polk was spared from major reductions in force and noted that critical work and support by team members was a key factor.

 

Renita Page, Anne Smith and Mike Kay gave Legislative/BESE updates.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to approve the purchase of four (4) lease buses.

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed personnel changes for July.  Mr. Ward gave an overview of personnel reduction and the goal has been met.  Mr. Travis stated that the Committee also recommended advertising for a curriculum supervisor and an assistant principal at Rosepine Elementary.  This will be placed on the July 14th Agenda for approval as well as approval of Performance Contracts.

 

Superintendent Williams introduced Colonel David G. Athey and welcomed him to Vernon Parish.  Superintendent Williams also reminded Board members of the Finance Committee meeting and Curriculum Committee meeting on Tuesday, July 14th.

 

Superintendent Williams also gave the following notice:

 

“NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OF THE PARISH OF VERNON, STATE OF LOUISIANA (THE “SCHOOL BOARD”), PLANS TO CONSIDER ADOPTING MILLAGE RATES (AD VALOREM TAX) FOR THE TAX YEAR 2015 FOR WARD 1, WARD 2 HORNBECK. WARD 2 ORANGE,

WARD 3, WARD 4, WARD 5, WARD 6, WARD 7, AND WARD 8 SCHOOL DISTRICTS AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON TUESDAY, JULY 14, 2015 AT 10:00A.M. AT THE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD OFFICE, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Johnnie Mae Palmer who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Palmer was a retired teacher and was instrumental in starting the gifted education programs in Vernon Parish; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Palmer was very active in the community and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Vera Nell Craft who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Craft was the mother-in-law of Sissie Craft, teacher at Evans High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Craft was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Betty Howard who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Howard was a retired secretary at Hornbeck High School with many years of dedicated service; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Howard was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Abigail Cryer who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, “Abby” was a retired teacher with over thirty four years of dedicated and loyal service; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Cryer was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and very active in the community and school system; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
