THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT BRANDON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Michael Bealer.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by John Blankenbaker.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 7, 2015 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Michael Bealer, Vernon Parish Sales Tax Office, discussed Senate Bill 177 (Repeal of the Inventory Tax) and its effect on the Vernon Parish School Board Office.

 

Mike Kay recognized Support Personnel of The Year as follows:

 

Elementary – Letitia Dees, paraprofessional at Hicks High School

Middle School – Darlene Moses, office paraprofessional at Evans

High School – Tammy Summler, custodian at Hicks High School

 

Students were recognized from the following schools and congratulated by the Board for their achievement(s) at State Competition:

 

Leesville Jr. High, Evans, Hicks, Pickering High, Rosepine High, Simpson

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to approve revisions to the Student Handbook as discussed on May 7, 2015.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to approve the “Adopt A School” Partnership with the Vernon Parish Chamber of Commerce.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to accept employee retirements.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the following Headstart Policies/Procedures:

 

VPHS Selection Criteria Point System

VPHS Non-Income Verification Form

VPHS Content Area Plans

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Finance Committee had met and Tim Ward reviewed the budget adjustments and revisions.  It was noted that there was an increase in workman’s compensation expenditures and a reduction of 2.3 million in revenues due to decreasing student enrollment.  Approval for the Revised Budget for 2014-2015 will be placed on the June 4th Agenda for approval.  There was discussion on increasing the price of lunches and breakfasts and no action was taken.  After discussion and on motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Committee will recommend to the full Board that all 2nd entrees be removed from the menu for the 2015-16 school year.  This will be placed on the June 4th Agenda for approval.

 

Randi Gleason reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and Anne Smith discussed the Summer Administrative Workshop to be held on June 15th & 16th at East Leesville Elementary School.  This workshop is for principals and assistant principals and will focus on policies and procedures.  Mrs. Smith also noted that application has been made for the DoDEA Grant (Department of Defense Education Activity).

 

Mrs. Page gave an update on testing and School Performance Scores and noted that summer school will be held at individual schools.  Application has been made for Principals Support Grant.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.

 

On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by David Detz, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.

 

Superintendent Williams congratulated all the schools for their achievements and thanked students, administrators, support personnel and parents for their dedication and support.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Emma Pousson who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Pousson was a retired food service technician at Pickering High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Pousson was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of David Detz, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
