THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  VICE-PRESIDENT DETZ CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Clifford Persons.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vernon Travis.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 14, 2015 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Students were recognized from the following schools and congratulated by the Board for their achievement(s) at State Competition: Anacoco High, Hornbeck High, Leesville High, Pitkin High, and Vernon Middle

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for bids for bread, milk and juice.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept bids for cafeteria and janitorial supplies.  Mr. Ward presented the bids and on motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to accept the low bid for cafeteria and janitorial supplies.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to accept bids for copy paper.  Nine bids were received and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept the low bid from CPG for $22.94 per case if bid meets specifications.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Angie Davis, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Price Quotation Calendar for 2015-2016.

 

Tom Neubert, Child Welfare/Attendance Director, discussed handbook revisions recommended by school principals.  These revisions will be placed on the May 12th Agenda.

 

Curtis Clay gave the Headstart Report and noted that the following items would be placed on the May 12th Agenda for approval:

VPHS Selection Criteria Point System

VPHS Non-Income Verification Form

VPHS Content Area Plans

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for May.  Mr. Travis noted that 47 positions had been eliminated through attrition and that the reduction process was on track to help balance the budget.  No action was taken at this time.

 

Superintendent Williams discussed the Fort Polk Progress trip to Washington, DC.  He noted that the Congressional Leadership, as well as, Pentagon staff were very receptive to the voices from Vernon Parish and Fort Polk.  Mr. Vernon Travis, who also attended these meetings, noted that Fort Polk scored high in the top five categories that were being rated for keeping Fort Polk troops here.  Colonel Moore state that the Army Chief of Staff visited Fort Polk and was very pleased, especially with the Education Initiative.

 

Fort Polk and Leesville were showcased in Washington and at Fort Polk by the Education Initiative and community involvement.

 

Superintendent Williams also reminded Board members of the Finance Committee meeting at 8:30AM and the Curriculum Committee meeting at 9:15AM on Tuesday, May 12th.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Cody Connor who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Cody was a Senior at Anacoco High School; and

            WHEREAS, Cody was a resident of Anacoco and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Delores Martin who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Martin was the mother of Dwight Martin, contract employee for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Martin was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
