THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT BRANDON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. James Williams, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Randi Gleason.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randi Gleason.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 10, 2015 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Mr. Jeff Taylor of Taylor & Sons recognized Ms. Cindy Gibson as Employee of The Month.  Ms. Gibson is a paraprofessional at South Polk Elementary School.  She was presented a plaque and congratulated for her dedication and hard work.

 

Mrs. Renita Page recognized the following Students of The Year:

Casey Williams, Matthew Christenson and Carter Coriell were selected as Parish Winners.

 

Renita Page recognized Cassandra Osborne, student at Anacoco High School, for achieving Platinum Level on the Work Keys Test.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for cafeteria and janitorial supplies.

 

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by Angie Davis, the Board voted to advertise for copy paper.

 

Curtis Clay presented the following Headstart Report and it will be placed on the Agenda for April 14th for approval:

 

VPHS Self Assessment

VPHS Long and Short Term Goals

VPHS Training and Technical Assistance Plan

VPHS 2015-2016 Grant

 

Vernon Travis reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for April.  Item was unanimously added to the committee agenda to discuss promotional contracts and these contracts will be on the April 14th Agenda for approval.  It was noted that there was continuing progress in reduction of staff.

 

Superintendent Williams noted that calendar proposals were sent to all schools and the 2015-2016 school calendar will be on the April 14th Agenda for approval.  He also reminded Board members of the Finance Committee meeting Tuesday at 8:30 and the Curriculum Committee at 9:15.  Employee naming lists and invitations to the Academic Awards Banquet were placed in Board folders.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Gwendolyn “Sue” Robertson who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Robertson was a retired teacher/SPUR Technician from Vernon Parish; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Robertson was a 1958 Graduate of Leesville High School, a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Milford Jeane who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Jeane was a retired bus driver and the father of Barbara Jordan, bus driver at Evans High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Jeane was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Carlene Westmoreland who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Westmoreland was the mother-in-law of Ruth Ann Westmoreland, counselor at Anacoco High School and Carol Westmoreland, retired teacher at Evans High School and was also the grandmother of Katie Reeks, teacher at Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Westmoreland was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Doris Brumley who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Brumley was a retired bus driver at Pickering Schools with over twenty five years of dedicated service; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Brumley was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Herbert Peavy who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Peavy was the father of Stephanie Robison, counselor at Evans High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Peavy was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Verla Bennett Stewart who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stewart was the mother of Joan Simmons, curriculum supervisor, the mother-in-law of Charles Simmons, retired bus driver and the grandmother of Jennifer Alligood, teacher at Anacoco High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stewart was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jim Seaman, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Phillip “PK” Lewis who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis was a former Board Member and was the husband of Glenda Lewis, retired bus driver; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Lewis was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Angie Davis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Gwendolyn Stephens who recently passes away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was a former bus driver at Simpson High School and the wife of Elbert Stephens, former bus driver at Simpson High; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
