THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  VICE-PRESIDENT BRANDON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Jon Welch.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randy Martin.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 6, 2014 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to receive the bids for bread, milk, and juice.  Tim Ward presented the only bid for bread, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to accept the bid from Flowers Baking Company if it meets specifications.  Mr. Ward presented the bids for milk and juice and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Mid-State Marketing for milk and juice if it meets specifications.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper.  Mr. Ward presented the bids and on motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Stratus Enterprises Inc. if specifications are met.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for special education supervisor.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to advertise for curriculum supervisor.

 

Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for June.  No action was taken.

 

Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the Bid Opening for South Polk Elementary School on June 11, 2014 at 2:00PM.

 

On motion of Steve Woods on behalf of the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their condolences to the family of Murphy O’Banion who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. O’Banion was the father-in-law of Randy Martin, District Four Board Member; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. O’Banion served as District Four Board Member for thirty-three years and his dedication to education, sports and his love for the Pickering community will long be remembered; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. O’Banion was a 1947 Graduate of Pickering High School, a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be dearly missed by his family and many friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of John Ellis Harvey who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Harvey was the father of Anita Harvey and Kathy Jarrell, bus drivers at Evans High School, the grandfather of Tanya Jeane, teacher at Evans High School and the brother-in-law of Peggy Jeane, bus aide at West Leesville; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Harvey was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be dearly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jo Ann Spears who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Spears was the mother of Ruth Ann Westmoreland, counselor at Anacoco High School and the grandmother of Katie Reeks, teacher at Leesville High; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Spears was a resident of Ruston and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of William Vernon Thompson who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson was the father of Tammy Travis, librarian at South Polk Elementary School and the father-in-law of Vernon Travis, District Six Board Member; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson was a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada and he will be sadly missed by his family and many friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board Members wish to express their sympathy to the family of Deomede “Joe” Simon who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Simon was the father of Dwain Simon, Resource Officer at Vernon Middle School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Simon was a resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Alva Lee Perkins who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Perkins was the mother of Gaynelle Perkins, former cook at South Polk Elementary, and the sister of Carolyn Mitchell, cook at South Polk Elementary; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Perkins was a lifelong resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Harold Davis who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was the father of Renelle Davis, former teacher, and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Eloise Jordan who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Jordan was a retired custodian at Hicks High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Jordan was a lifelong resident of Hicks and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
