THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Steve Woods.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Steve Woods.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 8, 2014, regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Students from the following schools were recognized and congratulated by the Board for their achievement(s) at State Competition:  Leesville Jr. High School, Leesville High School, Pitkin High School and Simpson High School

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to receive bids for janitorial and cafeteria supplies.  Mr. Ward presented the bids and on motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to accept the low bids for janitorial and cafeteria supplies.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for bids for bread, milk and juice.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to advertise for bids for copier paper.

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar.

 

Mr. Neubert reported that the Discipline/Uniform Committee had met and was recommending that the wording “Cargo Type Pants” be removed from the Dress Code Policy section in the handbook.  This item will be placed on the agenda for the May 6th meeting for approval. 

 

Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for May.  There was no action taken and no other business.

 

Randi Gleason reported that the Curriculum Committee had met and reviewed the Pupil Progression Plan revision.  This item will be placed on the May 6th Agenda for approval.

 

Superintendent Self stated that the Headstart Area Content Plan will be on the May 6th Agenda for approval – no changes have been made this school year.  Mr. Clay will be attending the May 6th meeting to answer any questions and a copy of the Plan will be available.  Superintendent Self also reminded Board Members of the Parish Academic Banquet on Monday, May 5th.  Superintendent Self discussed the AdvancED External Review Team Schedule. Notice is hereby given that the Parish School Board of the Parish of Vernon, State of Louisiana (the “School Board”), plans to consider adopting millage rates (ad valorem tax) for the tax year 2014 for Ward 1, Ward 2 Hornbeck, Ward 2 Orange, Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 5, Ward 6, Ward 7 and Ward 8 School Districts at the School Board meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 5:00PM at the Parish School Board Office, 201 Belview Road, Leesville, Louisiana.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Johnny Bodine who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bodine was the father of Michael Bodine, band director at Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bodine was a longtime resident of the Leesville area and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Hershel Smith who recently passed way; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was the father-in-law of Cindy Smith, teacher at the Optional School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Datha Lea McCullough who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. McCullough was the grandmother of Kristie Beasley, assistant principal at East Leesville Elementary; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. McCullough was a longtime resident of the Anacoco/Leesville area and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sorrow.

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Maxine Porche who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Porche was the mother of Pat Martinez, retired teacher; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Porche was a longtime resident of Mt. Vernon, Washington before moving to Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Illa LaCaze who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Lacaze was the wife of Anthony Lacaze, custodian at Pitkin High and the mother of Danna LaCaze, custodian at Pitkin High; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Lacaze was a resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of Clay McDaniel who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. McDaniel was the father-in-law of Debbie Moore, secretary at Pitkin High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. McDaniel was a lifelong resident of the Pitkin area and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
