THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT GLEASON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by John Blankenbaker.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by John Blankenbaker.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 11, 2014 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to rename Red Devil Stadium at Pickering High School. Hub Jordan, Principal at Pickering High School recommended naming the stadium “O’Banion Stadium” in honor of Murphy O’Banion. On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board approved to rename the stadium at Pickering to “O’Banion Stadium” – Home of the Red Devils.
Mr. Jimmy Funderburk discussed the school calendar for 2014-2015. Mr. Funderburk presented the two calendars that were given to all school personnel and stated that Calendar “A” was chosen. The Vernon Parish School Calendar will be placed on the agenda April 8th for approval.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to advertise for curriculum supervisor.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for cafeteria and janitorial supplies.
Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for April. Mr. Funderburk also stated that Superintendent Self would approve the naming list for employees next week. No action was taken.
Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the changes to ACT No. 267 in regards to changes taxes or authorizing elections. In order to comply with these changes, Superintendent Self stated that “Notice is given that the Parish School Board of the Parish of Vernon, State of Louisiana, plans to consider a resolution authorizing a general obligation bond (ad valorem tax) election to be held within Ward Seven Wardwide School District at the School Board meeting on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 10:00a.m. at the Parish School Board Office, 201 Belview Road, Leesville, Louisiana.
Superintendent Self also noted that testing would begin next week and reminded Board Members of Patriot Pride Day and the parade time change. Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the Academic Banquet to be held on May 5th at 6:00p.m.
Colonel Moore also invited everyone to the celebration welcoming home the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. Colonel Moore also expressed his appreciation to the Board and all staff members who helped make the Education Symposium a success.
Michael Reese on behalf of Fort Polk Progress presented Charles Balthrop a check for $1,000 for having the most parents attend the Symposium. Fort Polk Progress also presented seven college savings accounts.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Gale Williams who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams was a retired cook and the mother of Tammy Willis, paraprofessional and mother-in-law of Crystal Williams, teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams was a longtime resident of LaCamp and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Bobbye Gordy who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Gordy was a retired secretary from Simpson High School with many years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Gordy was a longtime resident of Simpson and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to send their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Alison Morgan who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Morgan was a teacher at Simpson High School, the daughter of Wallace McRae, former District Eight Board Member and the sister of Amy Dalme, teacher at Simpson; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Morgan was a resident of Simpson and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Michael Perkins on behalf of the Board, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Bobbie Jean Funderburk who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Funderburk was the mother of Jimmy Funderburk, Assistant Superintendent/Personnel Director and the mother-in-law of Sonja Funderburk, Title I Director; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Funderburk was a lifetime resident of Slagle and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Larry Johnson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was a 1971 Graduate of Leesville High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
