THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 5:00PM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Gerald Cooley.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Gerald Cooley.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the March 6, 2014 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to accept the high bid from School Tech Supply for $1584 trade in allowance.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board voted to accept the following retirements:
Gilbert, Polinette, sped aide/ELE
Grose, Torry, teacher/VMS
Cox, Karen, sped aide/ELE
McCann, Rhonda, teacher/SPE
O’Bryan, Patricia, librarian/VMS

Curtis Clay gave the Headstart Report for February and March and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Vernon Travis the Board voted to approve the following policies/procedures:

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to add Agenda Item 4A to approve the re-application of the 2014-2015 Federal Headstart
Grant. This vote was unanimous.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to approve the re-application of the 2014-2015 Headstart Federal Application Grant – this vote was also unanimous.
Vernon Travis reported that the Finance Committee had met and Tim Ward discussed the recent audit. Mr. Ward stated that the audit was good and that some issues were being addressed. Mr. Ward also stated that there was a need for a Charitable Donation Policy.
Mr. Travis noted that it was the recommendation of the committee to adopt the policy and on motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to approve the policy. After much discussion, and on motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to amend the policy with the stipulation that the policy has the District Attorney’s approval. This vote was unanimous.
Randi Gleason reported that the Curriculum Committee had met – Michael Reese discussed the Educational Symposium sponsored by Fort Polk Progress to be held on March 27th. Anne Smith discussed ELA and Math Curriculum. No action was required.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the Educational Symposium and urged all members to attend.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Wesley Stanly who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Wesley was the son of Finly Stanley, retired supervisor at the central office and the brother of Brenda Bealer, retired Headstart Director; and
WHEREAS, Wesley was a resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Finly Stanly who recently passed away and
WHEREAS, Mr. Stanly was a retired supervisor at the central office and the father of Brenda Bealer, retired Headstart Director; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Stanly was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Clara Spence who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spence was a retired teacher from Pitkin, the sister of Finly Stanley, retired supervisor at the central office and the aunt of Brenda Bealer, retired Headstart Director; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Spence was a lifetime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Janella Wright who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wright was the mother of Kathryn Anderson, retired Title 1 Director, Shirley Ward, retired supervisor and Linda Simons, retired teacher; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wright was a longtime resident of the Vernon Parish area and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Alton Norris who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Norris was an avid supporter of Vernon Parish Schools; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Norris was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
