THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Robert Pynes.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robert Pynes.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the February 6, 2014 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Superintendent Self recognized the following Teachers of the Year and expressed his appreciation for their hard work and dedication:

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to approve the amended Water Well Lease for the City of Leesville.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids to sell used computers.  Bids were received as follows:

 

Motor City Computers   $500.00

School Tech Supply      $1320.00 or $1584.00 trade in allowance

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to take these bids under advisement.

 

Mrs. Anne Smith discussed the Early Childhood Pilot Program.  Vernon Parish received a $100,000 Pilot Grant to fund special assessment tools and employee training to determine kindergarten readiness.

 

Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mr. Funderburk discussed the personnel changes for March.  There was no other business.

 

Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the Educational Symposium hosted by Fort Polk Progress on March 27th.

 

Superintendent Self also stated that a Finance Committee meeting was scheduled for 3:30 and a Curriculum Committee meeting at 4:15 on Tuesday, March 11th.

 

Mr. Asa Skinner also reviewed the constitutional amendment on Term Limits for Board Members that became effective January 1, 2014.

 

Colonel T. Glenn Moore stated that Patriot Pride Day will be held at Mountain Field on April 3rd to welcome home Patriots of the 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division.  The event will begin at 4:00PM and everyone is welcome to attend.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Myrtle Lee Burgess who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Burgess was the grandmother of Danny Singletary, AC Technician in the Maintenance Department; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Burgess was a longtime resident of the Leesville area and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness

 

On motion of Randi Gleason seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Robert “Sugar Bear” Jenkins who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins was a 1987 graduate of Leesville High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkins was a longtime resident of Leesville before relocating to Georgia and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Andrea Acey-Ford who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Ford was the daughter of Martha Acey, retired cook at Leesville Jr. High School; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Ford was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board wishes to express their sympathy to the family of W.L. Bynog Sr. who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bynog was a retired bus driver for the Vernon Parish Schools and the father of Lisa Cooley, bus driver at Vernon Middle School; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bynog was a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Mable Stephens who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was the mother of Kathy Westerchil, teacher at Leesville Jr. High; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Stephens was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Vicki Grose who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Grose was the sister of Mitzi Martin, former principal at Rosepine Elementary School and Torry Grose, teacher at Vernon Middle School; and

            WHEREAS, Ms. Grose was a longtime resident of DeRidder and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Jo Ann Mitchell who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell was a former bus driver for the Vernon Parish Schools; and

            WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

            WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Robert Bauer who recently passed away; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bauer was the father of Bunny Woods and the father-in-law of Steve Woods, District One Board Member; and

            WHEREAS, Mr. Bauer was a resident of Richardson, Texas and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

            BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
