THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT GLEASON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Mel Harris.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mel Harris.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the September 10, 2013 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to receive bids for propane for Evans, Hicks, and Simpson Schools.  One bid was received as follows:

 

Ferrell Gas    $1.35 per gallon

 

On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to accept the bid from Ferrell Gas. 

 

Superintendent Self presented new/revised policies.  The policies will be on the Agenda for October 8, 2013 for approval.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for principal at Rosepine Elementary School.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Jerry Jeane, the Board voted to accept the low bid from Insight for $75,200 for bleachers at Pickering High School.

 

Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Mr. Funderburk presented the personnel changes for October.  Mr. Funderburk also noted that it would be on the Agenda to advertise for a principal at Rosepine Elementary School.

In other business, Superintendent Self reminded Board Members of the Transportation Committee meeting Tuesday, October 8th at 8:30AM and the Headstart Training at 9:15AM.  Superintendent Self also stated that there will be a Practice Emergency Drill at Pickering Elementary School on October 22, 2013 at 9:00AM.  This Emergency Drill will involve the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Teams.  This is a training exercise/practice lock-down drill.  All parents will be notified and it will also be announced in newspapers and on radio.

Superintendent Self also stated that State Superintendent John White will be here on October 30th to visit some schools and that the BESE Board will be here on November 6th to visit schools.  The one time salary stipend supplement for all VPSB employees will be issued on October 10th

Colonel T. Glenn Moore, Garrison Commander at Fort Polk, updated the Board on the services at Fort Polk that have been cut back or cancelled due to the government shut down.  Tim Ward, Finance Director, also stated that the government shut down has not affected our school programs at this time.

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Dr. James Porter David, Sr. who recently passed away;

                WHEREAS, Dr. David was the brother of Anne Smith, Elementary Curriculum Director and the brother-in-law of Mark Smith Sr., former District One Board member; and

                WHEREAS, Dr. David was a longtime practicing physician in Alexandria and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of L. Reid Midkiff who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Midkiff was a retired principal at Pickering with thirty-four years of dedicated service; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Midkiff was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Herbet West who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. West was the father of Cindy Mitchell, cook at Hornbeck High School; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. West was a resident of Arkansas and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
