THE SCHOOL BOARD OF VERNON PARISH LOUISIANA CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION ON AUGUST 6, 2013 AT 10:00AM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. VICE-PRESIDENT BLANKENBAKER CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Maurice Johnson.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by John Blankenbaker.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the August 1, 2013 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Tom Neubert recognized the doctors and staff of Byrd Hospital and thanked them for their support. Mr. Neubert presented plaques to Mr. Roger LeDoux, and Mr. Sam Fulton, on behalf of all the doctors that participated in the athletic physicals. Over 680 sports physicals were provided this year at no cost to the parents or to the Board.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to receive bids for bleachers for Rosepine High School. One bid was received from Insight for a total of $65,000 and on motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to take this bid under advisement.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to advertise for bleachers for at Pickering High School.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for bids to sell a used activity bus at Leesville High School.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to receive bids for refurbished computers. On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to accept the low bid if it meets specifications. Mr. Travis asked how many computers would be purchased and Mr. Gallemore stated that one of the three models would be purchased with a budget of $100,000.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to accept the following retirement:
McKee, James, maintenance/CO
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
In other business, Superintendent Self noted that Teacher In-Service would begin tomorrow and that Friday, August 9th would be the first day of school for students.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Verline Martin who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Martin was the aunt of John Foster, retired maintenance employee, Jewell Davis, retired custodian currently working at Central Office, Arnikiquea Foster, Headstart aide at North Polk Elementary, and the grandmother of Dwight Martin, contract employee of the Vernon Parish School Board; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Martin was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their heartfelt sympathy to the family of Shanna McKee Thompson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Thompson was the granddaughter of now deceased Benard McKee, former District Seven Board Member, and Gaye McKee, former District Seven Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Thompson was a graduate of Rosepine High School and a lifelong resident of Vernon Parish; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at the time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Jean Nichols who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nichols was the sister of Darlene Boles, office aide at Simpson High School and the sister-in-law of David Nichols, Assistant Principal at Simpson High; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Nichols was a resident of Hutton and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Elaine Deason who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Deason was the sister-in-law of Joanne Pollard, office aide at Pitkin High School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Deason was a resident of Pitkin and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Ray Dickens who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dickens was the brother of Lucille Singletary, retired bus driver at Pitkin High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Dickens was a resident of DeRidder and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, on motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
