THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT GLEASON CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Doug Brandon.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Doug Brandon.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Gerald Cooley, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the April 16, 2013 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

Students from the following schools were recognized and congratulated by the Board for their achievement(s) at State Competition: Leesville High, Pitkin High, Rosepine High, and Simpson High.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to approve the Food Service Quotation Calendar for 2013-2014.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Robert Pynes, the Board voted to advertise for copier paper.
On motion of Jerry Jeane, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to advertise for janitorial and cafeteria supplies.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Michael Perkins, the Board voted to advertise for bread, milk, and juice.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to advertise for an activity bus for Leesville High School.
On motion of Michael Perkins, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for an activity bus for Rosepine High School.
On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to advertise for bleachers for Evans High School.
Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and Superintendent Self had discussed a 5% reduction in Headstart funding. This may cause a small reduction in Headstart staff for next school year. Also on May 7th, the Salary/Personnel Committee will recommend to the full Board the hiring an additional staff member for the Sales Tax Office.
In other business, Superintendent Self discussed the Fort Polk Progress meeting in Washington. They met with Army officials and legislators. Our community was commended on the large turnout for the listening session and it was pointed out that Fort Polk was one of very few bases that had a Land Acquisition Program. A decision is expected in June.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Murrell Jackson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was the brother of Belton Jackson, former District Eight Board Member; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jackson was a lifelong resident of Simpson and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Varnie Mae and Silas Harralson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Harralson were the grandparents of Terry McDonald, bus driver at West Leesville Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. & Mrs. Harralson were residents of Anacoco and they will both be truly missed by their family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to their family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
