THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION, ON JUNE 12, 2012 AT 5:00PM, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LA. PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

The meeting was opened in prayer by Richard Schwartz.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Richard Schwartz.
Superintendent Self and Assistant Superintendent Jimmy Funderburk recognized retirees for this school year. Superintendent Self on behalf of the Board Members presented certificates and thanked the retirees for their dedication and service.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve and dispense with the reading of the minutes of June 7, 2012.
On recommendation of Superintendent Self and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to approve the following resignations:

On recommendation of Superintendent Self and on motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to name Renita Page as Elementary Curriculum/Technology Supervisor on the following roll call vote:
YEAS: Randi Gleason, Mel Harris, Robert Pynes, Doug Brandon, Steve Woods, Richard Schwartz, Mike Perkins, John Blankenbaker
NAYS: Jerry Jeane, Randy Martin, Vernon Travis, Gerald Cooley
On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted unanimously to enter into executive session at 5:15PM to discuss the renewal of Superintendent Self’s contract. Superintendent Self waived his twenty four hour notice. On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to return to open session at 5:47PM.
On motion of Richard Schwartz, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted unanimously approve Superintendent Self’s contract beginning on June 15, 2012 and ending on June 30, 2014.
On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Doug Brandon, the Board voted to approve budget amendments related to personnel changes.
On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to authorize the president and secretary to pay the claims.
In other business, Superintendent Self stated that he would advertise for the principal position at Leesville High School and the appointment will be in July. A Transportation Committee meeting will be held at 4:00PM on July 10, 2012.
Vernon Travis reported that the Finance/Insurance had met at 4:15PM. John Norris reviewed adjustments to current policies. It was noted there was a slight increase in premiums. No action was taken.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board voted to adopt the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Ommie Wallace who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wallace was the mother-in-law of Dody Wallace, school nurse for the Vernon Parish School Board; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Wallace was a resident of Leander and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to her family at this time of sorrow.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Col. (Ret.) Kenneth Johnson who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Johnson was an avid supporter of the Vernon Parish Schools; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Johnson was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
There being no further business, on motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
