THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M., 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT PERKINS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

The meeting was opened in prayer by Randi Gleason.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Randi Gleason.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by Vernon Travis, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the May 8, 2012 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

BG Chinn addressed the Board and gave updates on Fort Polk.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board voted to approve Central Office and Administrative employees.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids for bread, milk and juice.  On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the lowest bids providing they meet specifications.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to review bids for janitorial and cafeteria supplies that were received on Wednesday, July 6, 2012 at 10:00AM.  On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to accept the lowest bids providing they meet specifications.

 

On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to receive bids for copier paper.  On motion of Doug Brandon, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to accept the lowest bid providing it meets specifications.

 

On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to advertise for bids for propane for Evans, Hicks, and Simpson.

 

On recommendation of Superintendent Schwartz, and on motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Richard Schwartz, the Board voted to name Mitzi Martin as Principal of Rosepine Elementary School replacing Charles Lewis.

 

On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to adopt the following resolution for Rapides Foundation Grants:

 

STATE OF LOUISIANA

PARISH OF VERNON

 

On the 7th day of June, 2012, at a meeting of the School Board of Vernon Parish held in the City of Leesville, a quorum of Board Members present, the following action was taken:

 

It was duly moved and seconded that the following resolution be adopted:

 

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the School Board of Vernon Parish does hereby authorize the Superintendent, on terms and conditions he/she may deem advisable, to negotiate and execute the Healthy Behaviors Initiative Grant, and the STEM/CTE 2012-2013 Implementation Grant from the Rapides Foundation on behalf of the School Board named herein, and further hereby authorize the Superintendent and grant the power and authority to do all things necessary to implement, maintain, amend or renew said grants/documents.

 

The above resolution was passed by a majority of those present and voting in accordance with the by-laws and policies of the said Board.

Presentations for the Curriculum/Technology Supervisor position were made by Lee Coriell, Renita Page, and Joan Simmons.  Naming for this position will be June 12th.

 

On motion of John Blankenbaker, seconded by Steve Woods, the Board approved the Headstart Content Area Plans.

 

Mel Harris reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for June and would make its recommendation to the Board on June 12th

 

In other business, Superintendent Self stated that the Sales Tax collections increased this year by 11% and that checks would be mailed on June 21, 2012.  He also reminded Board members of the Retiree Reception on Tuesday, June 12th at 4:30, and of the Finance/Insurance Committee meeting at 4:15.  Superintendent Self reminded Board members that Mr. Jon Guice would be conducting an in-service immediately after the meeting on Tuesday.  Superintendent Self also stated that he would advertise for an assistant principal at Anacoco High, Rosepine High, and Simpson High and that Paul Poe would be transferred to Hornbeck on July 1st

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Richard West “Dick” Berry who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Berry was the father of Lisa Franklin, teacher at North Polk Elementary, and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berry was a 1954 graduate of Leesville High School and was a founding member of the Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Berry was a resident of Leesville, and he will be sadly missed by his family and many friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O LU T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Larry Thompson who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson was the father of Peggy Vinson, bus driver at West Leesville Elementary School; and

                WHEREAS, Mr. Thompson was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish, an avid supporter of Pickering School Sports, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Robert Pynes, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

 R E S O L U T I O N

 

                WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Chaplain Gerald H. Smith who recently passed away; and

                WHEREAS, Chaplain Smith was the father of Danny Smith, teacher/coach at Rosepine High School; and

                WHEREAS, Chaplain Smith was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish, a substitute teacher, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

                BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
