THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. DECEMBER 1, 2011, 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA.  PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

ROBERT PYNES JR. – BUSINESS OBLIGATION

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.

 

The meeting was opened in prayer by Vernon Travis.

 

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Vernon Travis.

 

On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the November 8, 2011 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.

 

Mrs. Anne Smith discussed Response to Intervention (RTI).  She explained to the Board that RTI is a multi-tier approach to the early identification and support of students with learning and behavior needs.  Each school in the parish has at least a half time interventionist who coordinates the intervention process. 

 

Mr. Ron DeGray, Military Student Transition Consultant, stated that his role is to address the unique challenges faced by students of military families as they go through times of transition, deployment, or reintegration of a military parent.  Mr. DeGray works with the District to coordinate communication between parents, the schools, and Fort Polk. 

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to accept or reject the high bid for $1800 from A.V. Sonny Davis for the used bus at Leesville High School.  This bid had been taken under advisement at the November 8th Board meeting and on motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by Mel Harris, the Board accepted the high bid of $1800 from A.V. Sonny Davis.

 

On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by Randy Martin, the Board voted to name Mike Perkins as Board President for 2012.  On motion of Vernon Travis, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to name Randi Gleason as Vice-President for 2012.  Both of these votes were unanimous.

 

Superintendent Self, Tim Ward, and John Farris discussed new and revised policies (Bids and Quotations, Dismissal of Employees, Report Cards, Purchasing, Employee Conduct, & Grading System) for the Vernon Parish School Board.  These policies will be on the December 6th Agenda for approval.

 

Curtis Clay discussed the following Headstart Policies that will also be on the December 6th Agenda for Approval.

 

  1. Head Start Discipline Plan

  2. Head Start Child Attendance and Tardiness Policy

  3. Head Start Policy for Conflict Resolution

  4. Compensation for Head Start Field Trips

  5. Head Start Program and Planning Timeline

  6. Head Start Career Opportunity Policy

  7. Head Start Monthly In-Kind Sheet

 

Mike Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for December and would make its recommendation to the Board on December 6, 2011.

 

In other business, Superintendent Self reminded Board members of the Transportation Committee on Tuesday, December 6th at 4:00PM followed by the regular Board meeting at 5:00PM.  Superintendent Self also noted the progress of the plan for new construction at South Polk Elementary.  It was noted that all Board members have documented their required six hours of training for 2011.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Pat Sliman who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Sliman was the mother of Peter Sliman , III, bus driver at West Leesville Elementary and Susan Benson, longtime substitute employee for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Sliman was a lifelong resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their condolences to the family of Iva Lois West who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. West was a retired teacher and the mother of Linda West, former Board Member for the Vernon Parish School Board; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. West was a longtime resident of Leesville and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

 

R E S O L U T I O N

 

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their condolences to the family of Norman Aubrey Fletcher who recently passed away; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was the husband of Linda Fletcher, bus driver at West Leesville Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Fletcher was a longtime resident of Anacoco and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.

 

There being no further business, and on motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the meeting was adjourned.
