THE VERNON PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CONVENED IN REGULAR SESSION AT 10:00 A.M. OCTOBER 6, 2011 AT 201 BELVIEW ROAD, LEESVILLE, LOUISIANA. PRESIDENT TRAVIS CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND ON ROLL CALL THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS WERE PRESENT:

There was also present Mr. Jackie D. Self, Secretary of the Board.
The meeting was opened in prayer by Reverend Jeff James.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mike Perkins.
On motion of Mel Harris, seconded by John Blankenbaker, the Board voted to approve the minutes of the September 6, 2011 regular meeting and dispense with the reading of the minutes.
Mr. Ralph Kimball, representative for Taylor & Sons, presented the Vernon Parish School System Employee of The Month to Bobby Hilton, Head Custodian at Anacoco High School. Mr. Hilton received a plaque, gift card, and pin for his outstanding contribution and success at Anacoco High School.
Mr. James Williams, Transportation/Food Service Director, recognized the cafeteria managers of each school for their reduction in workman compensation claims. All the schools had either no claims, reduced claims, or claims with no pay-out. Claims were reduced from 40 to 14 in just one year. Mr. Williams thanked the managers and the Food Service Department for their hard work and dedication.
On motion of Steve Woods, seconded by Randi Gleason, the Board voted to advertise for bids to sell used activity bus at Leesville High School.
Mr. Perkins reported that the Salary/Personnel Committee had met and reviewed the personnel changes for October and would make its recommendation to the Board on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
In other business, Superintendent Self reminded the Board members of the in-service on October 12th presented by Jon Guice and the Transportation Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 11th at 9:00AM. Board members were also reminded that updated/new policies were in their folders and would be discussed at the Tuesday Board meeting. Superintendent Self reported that the trip to Washington was a success and that the proposal was well received for funding for South Polk Elementary. Superintendent Self also announced that Vernon Parish is ranked 6th in the State on District Performance Scores with an overall letter grade of “B”.
Colonel Shuck also noted that approximately 3400 soldiers would be reuniting with their families within the next few months. He also discussed the new ID Card that would be issued at Fort Polk.
On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their sympathy to the family of Mary McDonald Hanna who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hanna was the sister of Rae Strother, Transportation/Food Service Secretary at the Central Office; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Hanna was a resident of Pineville and she will be sadly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board take this means to express their condolences to the family of Joshua Moulton who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Joshua was the son of Bertha Moulton, paraprofessional at Pickering Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Joshua was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and a teacher in Jonesville; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Gerald Cooley, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Cody and Jaden Marshall who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Cody and Jaden were the brother and sister of Brittany Draughn, teacher at Anacoco High School and the grandchildren of Linda Brister, bus driver at Simpson High School; and
WHEREAS, Cody was a Junior at Hicks High School and loved being with his family and being outdoors; and
WHEREAS, Jaden was a fourth grader in her Aunt Belinda McKenzie’s class and she also loved being with her family and her dance classes; and
WHEREAS, Cody and Jaden will be greatly missed by their many friends and family; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to their family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Mike Perkins, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Ed Blankenbaker who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blankenbaker was the father of John Blankenbaker, District Seven Board Members; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Blankenbaker was a resident of DeRidder and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randy Martin, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of Viola Thevenot who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Thevenot was the grandmother of Dwain Ducote, Principal at Pickering Elementary School; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Thevenot was a resident of Cottonport and she will be greatly missed by her family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to her family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Randi Gleason, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the Vernon Parish School Board takes this means to express their sympathy to the family of James Bayham who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bayham was the father of Paulette Jeane and the father-in-law of Ronald Jeane both retired employees at the Central Office; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Bayham was a resident of Leesville and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
On motion of Beryl Ford, seconded by the Board, the Board adopted the following memorial resolution:

WHEREAS, the members of the Vernon Parish School Board wish to express their sympathy to the family of Rudolph Jeter who recently passed away; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jeter was a retired custodian at Evans High School; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Jeter was a longtime resident of Vernon Parish and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends; now
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Vernon Parish School Board requests a copy of this memorial resolution be sent to his family at this time of sadness.
